About 600 candidates for state and district offices and many local aspirants began the Democratic primary season. R S Sterling campaigned in Port Arthur and Beaumont while Tom Hunter spoke in Houston. Ferguson remains idle as James E. Ferguson canvasses for his wife.
R. S. Sterling planned to speak Tuesday in Houston while Tom F. Hunter set talks in Port Arthur in the afternoon and Beaumont at night. M. H. Wolfe to speak in Beeville with Roger Q. Evans scheduled for McAllen and Laredo. Other candidates had not announced dates.
A rally in Austin tomorrow night faced doubt whether Ferguson would speak while wet and dry demonstrations spread across the state. Fireworks would continue after Texas voters cast ballots in the referendum on prohibition at Saturday's primary, a contest unlikely to settle the issue quickly.
President Hoover will remain at his Rapidan fishing camp tonight and plans to return to the White House tomorrow, following his decision announced from Camp Luray in Virginia.
Dublin reports the Senate on July 18 passed the emergency duties bill on second reading without a vote, imposing extra tariffs against Britain.
In New York on July 18, eleven Long Island policemen were suspended after an inquiry into Hy man Stark's death in a brutal third degree case. Three suspects alleged Stark was beaten and dragged by hair after handcuffing. Justice Meier Steinbrink said a decision would come tomorrow morning.
Amon G. Carter publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram will fly to Lubbock to speak Tuesday in support of Governor Sterling and for honesty in government. He will arrive at 3 PM.
Minnie Kennedy Hudson mother of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson-Hutton filed for divorce from Guy Edward Hudson in Los Angeles accusing him of betrayal and debt. She recalled a moonlit June 1931 Las Vegas ceremony and a strained marriage while noting promissory notes totaling 4200 dollars. Hudson tearfully expressed hope for possible reconciliation but accepted the action.
The sun scorches the Midwest and Southwest with temperatures near or above 100 in many cities. Omaha reports another heat related death as Nashville and Memphis reach 94 while the outlook predicts scattered showers for Georgia Florida Louisiana and Texas and another heat wave in Tennessee.
Special to The News from Clovis dated July 18 reports physicians hold hope for recovery of Mr. and Mrs. Vernie Wagner after a gasoline explosion at their home. Mrs. Wagner suffered more severe burns as the couple were cleaning clothes with gasoline and fumes from an open pan likely ignited by the stove pilot light.
The United States and Canada signed the St. Lawrence River treaty aimed at linking the Great Lakes with the ocean. Secretary Stimson and Canadian minister W. D. Herridge signed for their governments. The accord awaits ratification by US Senate and Canadian Parliament plus funding for a 27 foot deep waterway projected to take 10 years. President Hoover hailed the milestone.
Dallas July 18 Judge Towne Young of Forty-fourth District Court refused to issue a mandamus ordering the Dallas County Democratic executive committee to hold a referendums on resubmitting the 18th amendment. The court found the board lacked authority to spend funds for the measure and witness testimony cited electoral cost from candidate assessments. Walter Reid, a Fifth District congressional candidate who favors repeal, had petitioned the mandamus.
Weather outlook shows fair conditions for Amarillo and vicinity on Tuesday with fair to partly cloudy skies across West Texas. New Mexico areas expect generally fair weather with some unsettled northern portions. temperatures trend modestly higher through the day.
Speaker John Nance Garner arrived in Dallas with his wife to a rousing reception after accusing President Hoover of pushing legislation for a select clientele. He spoke from an improvised platform at the station, broadcast on WFAA, and predicted more speeches over the next three months while urging trust in government power.
The text reports that Speaker John N. Garner will learn of his vice presidency nomination via a three cent postal notice. Senator Alben W. Barkley, as temporary convention chairman, will deliver the news by letter with a three cent stamp, and Garner will accept likewise.
The speaker urged transferring control of political power to his Democratic party, arguing it should serve the American people rather than a privileged few. He recounted recent Congress battles, noting the President vetoed measures including a proposal to allocate $100,000,000 for individual relief. Continued on page 10.
Dr. Bradford Knapp resigns as president of Alabama Polytechnic Institute effective September 1 to accept the presidency of Texas Technological College in Lubbock. He cited Auburn ties and Texas calls, noting he came to Auburn four years ago from Oklahoma A. & M. College at Stillwater.
In Madill Oklahoma Wiley Lynn ac quitted killer of Bill Tilghman dies after fatally wounding Crockett Long State operative. Long shoots back as Lynn and Long exchange fire across a drug store crowd. Both men suffer multiple wounds with Long dying and Lynn later dies in Ardmore hospital. Rody Watkins and John Hilburn are among bystanders wounded.
An examining trial is set for L. M. Parks, a Sweetwater businessman charged with murder in the drowning of his wife at Lake Trammell on July 8. Parks was returned from San Angelo, and Fay Condit, arrested in Miami Oklahoma, is brought to Sweetwater and charged with encouraging Parks to commit the offense.
Sterling supporters organize a wide campaign across the Panhandle for Governor Ross Sterling’s re election. Rallies will occur in most counties with speakers including Walter Allen James Gulerie H E Foster and Judge Hoover.
Voters face final chance to cast absentee ballots in the Democratic primaries and to update certified poll lists after residence changes. Absentee ballots include a separate question on submitting the eighteenth amendment to Congress for repeal or retention. County clerk expects near 500 absentee votes by close, the largest in Amarillo to date.
Senator Norris of Nebraska says he cannot serve on the agriculture sub committee that will conduct the inquiry into the Farm Board. He was one of five senators appointed by Chairman McNary but will be unavailable. The investigation is set to begin tomorrow.

Washington July 18 A long line of veterans seeking transport home filled the Veterans Administration buildings as two men were arrested near the police court for organizing a protest against trials of four comrades. The split ranks of the bonus army formed three factions led by Pace Robertson and Waters, with defections and new divisions forming in front of the capitol.
Ross D. Rogers will be sworn in as mayor of Amarillo tonight at city hall in a crowded ceremony broadcast live on WDAG at 8 30 PM. He won last Tuesday's election by 479 votes over Lon D. Marrs in Amarillo’s most hotly contested race.
Four unmasked men robbed the Idabel National Bank of about 7500 dollars this afternoon and fled east toward the Arkansas line. Robbers seated in the rear car fired with machine guns while a following car is believed to be part of a convoy. Assistant cashier C. R. O'Neal and customer Miss Kate Allen were forced to lie on the floor.
A violent earthquake lasting about 40 seconds was felt in Santiago at 1 30 PM today as residents reported shaking and furniture rattling across the city.
