Between Soissons and Chateau Thierry French and American forces advance six miles and capture several towns, signaling a major wartime push. Secretary Baker tightens public messaging as the nation braces for further gains.
Washington July 18 The heart of the American nation fought with the boys over the top in France as a Franco American attack drove inland from Chateau Thierry toward Soissons. Officials hailed the surprise operation as a turning point with a possible wider Allied counterstroke and renewed German difficulties along the Aisne Marne front.
Allied troops broke the German line along the Rheims area and from the Marne to the Aisne. Thousands of prisoners and vast artillery and machine gun losses marked the daylight drive. Soissons heights and several villages were recaptured as fighting continued from Chateau Thierry to Soissons.
Temperature readings by hour yesterday and notable daily highs and lows shown for Amarillo and surrounding areas. Forecast calls for Friday to be generally fair and warmer, New Mexico partly cloudy with showers and cooler east portion, Saturday generally fair and warmer, West Texas mostly fair with rising Panhandle temperatures.
Washington ordered 270 black residents of Colorado to entrain within five days starting August 15. Provost Marshal John Evans of Colorado announced receipt of the call in Denver on July 18.

American forces and French troops driving south of Soissons surged through the German lines by noon. They reported taking about 3000 prisoners, dozens of cannons, and large quantities of ammunition and stores, as tanks and infantry advanced with heavy bombardment and close fighting.
In London a report states French troops have gained a ravine along a five mile front near the river Criseennnne that narrows to a pass toward Rus aney, with a thousand prisoners credited to American forces amid the ongoing score of war actions.
Associated Press report from San Antonio says Major Jos. S. Peters died at Kelly Field infirmary from injuries suffered Monday when his airplane side-slipped. Peters, formerly of Starkville Mississippi, had come to the city from Long Beach California.
Official statement notes several enemy planes attempted a raid on the Paria district. Air defenses fired immediately as the alarm rang at 11 58. The all clear was sounded at 12 40 a.m.
Allied American and French forces drive a major offensive across 27 miles west of Soissons to northwest of Chateau Thierry, capturing towns, guns, and thousands of German troops. The advance reaches key supply routes and threatens German positions east of Rheims.
The French American attack across a wide front north of the Marne shocks German troops as many officers are captured asleep. Tanks participated, and Allied forces report taking hundreds of prisoners and numerous machine guns while advancing with support from French units.
Reports from Paris describe a rent counter attack by French and American troops between the Aisne and Marne fronts, advancing six hours to nearly double the distance German forces covered in three days. French counter battery work slowed German artillery. Luftwaffe efforts failed to blunt the push as lines shift near Soissons and the Crise ravine.
