Gov Nelson A Rockefeller and other GOP leaders lashed at Senator Barry Goldwater over a controversial statement deepening party divisions. In other notes, Dr Sam Sheppard left Columbus to wed his German fiancée and promised to quit Ohio if he must return to prison. A retired Army colonel was named a national committee member. Two Sinatra Jr. kidnappers saw prison terms cut, making them parole eligible.
San Francisco experts start post mortems after the convention, noting bizarre findings. A 24 year old suspect identified as Joe W. Carlisle of Rusk Texas was captured in Bossier City Louisiana after fleeing Wells First State Bank with more than 15 thousand dollars. He held a bookkeeper and later a woman hostage but both were released unharmed. Carlisle admitted planning the robbery and was turned over to FBI agents.

A Soviet naval vessel fired three shots across the bow of the SS Sister Katinga as it left Novorossisk for Istanbul after a wage dispute. US State Department filed an oral protest, citing excessive Soviet actions. The ship was boarded, fined 50 rubles, and permitted to continue.
1309 delegates meet in Albuquerque to smooth liquor law reform and the pre primary convention law. The convention will elect 36 delegates to cast NM's 24 votes in Atlantic City. Repeal efforts on fair trade liquor laws appear to fail in committees.

UPI report from San Francisco says Senator Barry Goldwater’s extremism remark provoked furious replies from Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and other moderates. Rockefeller called the statement dangerous and irresponsible. Goldwater challenged Rockefeller to define extremism and defended past presidents’ extreme actions in defense of liberty.
Dr. Samuel Sheppard left Columbus to marry his German fiancée and avoid returning to Ohio custody. Ohio sought a federal order to arrest him and cancel his bond, with a hearing set for Wednesday. attorney F Lee Bailey threatened to move him out of state.
Moreton Rolleston, owner of the Heart of Atlanta motel, sues for 11 million claiming the act will harm his business if forced to accept Negro guests. A NAACP suit against restaurant owner Maddox was also heard as the panel prepared to rule on public accommodation provisions.
A P AP report says a Wichita Falls jury found 33 of 35 accusations against Sheriff Hammett Vance true and the judge planned a formal ouster order. He faces perjury and forgery charges next week as Vance could potentially resume office in January despite suspension. The case included a widow’s allegations and threats against the sheriff.
