In five years the Korean incident shows faulty military planning. Retired Gen Jacob Devers says tanks and more tactical air craft are missing and needed. He notes infantry, armor, and tactical aircraft are Russia’s strengths and the U S lags in all three while jet weapons may help later.

Tokyo July 18 AP report says a North Korean assault reached Taejon’s outskirts before stalling. US troops reportedly hold positions north and west of Taejon, with signs of a broad withdrawal toward a foothill line 35 miles southeast, while Taejon remains a 100,000 population city and former US headquarters.
Sgt First Class Harvey N. Bailey, 34, Amarillo native, reported missing in action in Korea. He served with the 21st Infantry Regiment after re entering the service in 1948 and had earlier earned five battle stars with the 112th Cavalry in WWII. He is survived by his wife, two young children, and several siblings in Amarillo, Borger, and Houston.
MacArthur's report cited "little enemy activity" on the front while US patrols probed near the Kum River for troop movements. The communique estimated North Korean battle casualties at more than 11,000 but did not specify the time frame. Continued on Page 6.

A difficult cold front moved through the Amarillo area causing a cloudier sky and a small temperature dip yesterday. The front arrived near noon and retreated north of Dalhart by last night, with forecasts for renewed movement and isolated thunder showers. Highs were expected around 93 degrees in Amarillo, slightly above yesterday, while winds varied up to 24 mph with gusts in the morning.
In Washington on July 17 AP, FBI Director J Edgar Hoover announced the arrest of Julius Rosenberg, 32, an engineer plant operator in New York City and former Army Signal Corps member, on conspiracy to commit espionage charges. He called Rosenberg a key link in Soviet espionage. Also in custody over the past two months were Harry Gold of Philadelphia, Alfred Dean Slack of Syracuse, and David Greenglass, a former Army sergeant from New York City, all charged similarly.

Amarillo's board tentatively approved a 1950-51 operating budget of 2,875,695, up 416,420 from 1949-50, with 1,439,875 from county state funds under the new foundation program. Taxes would rise to 97 cents per 100 valuation, total levy to 1.30, while the interest and sinking fund levy climbs from 31 to 32 cents, though bond needs could be covered without tax rate increases if collections stay high. Sim Kelly cautioned the $11,000 cushion could vanish if collections fall.
Amarillo hosts a full slate of activities from the 6day weekly tournament at Amarillo Country Club to a noon Kiwanis and Lions Club meetings. A 7:30 PM rally at Lambie farm features Green River Home Demonstration, plus baseball at Gold Sox Field and a Legion post meeting electing officers. Midnight marks absentee vote deadline.
Gov. Ae Jan Shivers office announced receipt of an extradition application from Oklahoma to fetch Orval Grim state senator, plus L. L. Padgett and L. B. Thomas. They are charged with forgery uttering and passing and conspiracy in a Lipscomb County will case. Dist. Atty. Tom Brasey filed the request.
Political forecast: warming last week but cooler mood expected before next Saturday's balloting as candidates brace for votes.
Perryton candidate Pete LaMaster vents over match supply delays for campaign reminders. He finally received thousands of boxes with five days until election. Rival Walter Rogers claims a brisk pace, distributing 3160 boxes in under a day during stops in Borger and Dumas. LaMaster heads to a Childress rally then Wellington.
An Amarillo man Harvey Eldon Durrett 22 died in a head on crash with a Dallas truck on Highway 287 five miles east of Amarillo shortly after 8 pm. The truck driver Jack Windham 30 of Dallas suffered minor injuries and was taken to St Anthony's Hospital. Continued on page 6.
An Indian transport two engine Dakota crashed in the Kashmir mountains killing 22 aboard, including five Americans. Victims named include Col. Perry Brown UN observer, Lt. Col. Robert Mayfield, Sanford Mayor of Garden City New York UN Secretariat rep, and two American embassy employees in New Delhi.
