Tragic House Fire Destroys Mellon Family in Ralls

In Ralls at 10 30 this morning Mrs C C Mellon 37 and her 1 year old twin Elmer died in a fire caused by an oil stove explosion. The mother attempted to rescue the child but perished. the baby was dead on removal. The home burned within minutes as neighbors and state health official B C Ruthven aided mother. Mrs Mellon leaves a husband and seven children. Funeral plans pending.

Aged Clovis Farmer Dies From Accidental Poisoning

Special to The News. Clovis New Mexico July 17 W S McConnell 85 father of J M McConnell farmer living southwest of here died today from acid poisoning found in his room after 10 AM his son's wife found him. Coroner jury ruled self administered accidentally believed he picked up bottle thinking it was mouth wash.

Illinois Bandits Kill Deputy During Buckley Bank Robbery

Three bandits robbed the Buckley State Bank of 5200 dollars and fled east in Illinois. Deputy Sheriff Henry Ennen was killed after firing his pistol. bandit Joe Malawhiski was captured shortly after but wounded.

County to Let Contract Soon for 6th Paving

County Judge Sam B Motlow announced that the paving contract for U S Highway 66 between Amarillo and the east Potter County line will be let within 30 days. At a luncheon with U S Highway 66 Association officials and the Chamber of Commerce highway committee, progress on the Chicago to Los Angeles route was reviewed with plans for an all weather 66 from the Texas Oklahoma line to Chicago by November. The route will be paved except for 40 miles to be oil and gravel, and gaps are rapidly closing with funding expected for New Mexico segments by fall.

Fatal collision west of Canyon takes life of Raymond Schmitz

Raymond Schmitz 19 of Canyon died when his light car collided head on with a heavy coupe driven by Leo Stoker, injuring Cecil Slaton 17 and Mr and Mrs Stoker. Slaton suffered severe head injuries and both Stokers were hurt. All four were taken to Canyon and Amarillo hospitals after the wreck on the Hereford highway.
