Roosevelt abandons his planned journey to the Middle West after a conference with advisers at his Oyster Bay home. He will stay in Oyster Bay until August then head to Chicago for the convention and may deliver statements on his position beforehand.
Chairman Hilles of the Republican National Committee was formally presented at the new national headquarters on the Times Building. He stated that Mr. Barnes would lead the Republican organization in New York.
President Taft sent to the Senate the nominations of Sherman P. Allen of Vermont for assistant secretary of the treasury and Luther Connat Jr. of New York for Commissioner of Corporations to succeed Herbert Knox Smith who resigned to join Roosevelt forces.
Kingsville Tex July 17 The Sand Sea located thirty miles south of the city has been rolling heavily of late with sand billows more than fifty feet high. The desert bed traversed by shifting currents spans about twenty five miles in length and roughly ten miles wide, a natural phenomenon drawing scientists and tourists but menacing the Frisco railroad that runs through it.
A three year old child of Herbert Rouse in Mount Vernon Texas drank carbolic acid from a dresser cabinet at its grandfather Robert Rouse. The child was promptly taken to a doctor but died around noon after efforts to save it.
Showers are possible Thursday based on the scrambled record. Yesterday's temperatures show a high around 73 and a low near 67 with rainfall totaling about 1.03 inches up to 7 p.m. The 1911 figures include maximums near .87 and minimums around .67 and trace rainfall in late day readings.
The forecast calls for local showers Thursday across West Texas with cooler air in the south. Friday should be fair, bringing drier conditions and light winds.
Heavy rains fell this afternoon in Temple Austin San Antonio Coleman Dublin Sulphur Springs Farmersville Hamlin Denton Houston and Beaumont. Coast country remained cloudy and threatening while the rest of the state stayed clear and hot with Galveston at 84 and other areas 92 to 106.
Joe Levy signed articles for a return bout with Wolgast for the lightweight championship at Vernon Arena. Indications are that Wolgast will sign, moving toward a high stakes match.
Washington, July 17. The Senate committee probed Taft's 1908 campaign fund as part of examining the political warchest. Postmaster General Hitchcock, GOP chair for 1908, testified the total Republican fund was 1,655,518 dollars. He said neither the tobacco trust nor its stockholders contributed. Some stockholders from Steel Corp and International Harvester, including George W. Perkins, did donate to the Taft fund.
Fort Worth July 17 The board of directors of the Agricultural and Mechanical college will meet in Fort Worth August 6 to award the contract for a 200000 dollar main building to replace the one destroyed by fire. Session at Westbrook hotel begins at 9:00 a.m. Members listed include Walton Peteet Fort Worth Judge John I Guion Ballinger L J Hart San Antonio Dr J Allen Kyle Houston D J Kempner Galveston R L Bennett Paris Charles Davis Steele's Star and Ed R Kane Austin.
Crowds flood Dublin as Prime Minister Asquith and Chief Liberal Whip head to Ireland. Thousands expected to swell the city population by tomorrow night. He will stay with Augustine Birrell at the official Phoenix Park residence.
Seagirt New Jersey July 17 The Democratic campaign committee to direct the next presidential drive will be selected here tomorrow by Governor Wilson and National Chairman Meemons with nine party leaders invited to confer The final list will not be announced until complete.
An explosion in shaft No. 3 of the Lehigh and Wilkesbarre Coal Company mine in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania kills two and injures seven others. The injured are hospitalized and the dead are brought out of the mine.
President Taft faces opposition from Senator Gamble and Representative Burke as they push to replace electors listed with Roosevelt support in South Dakota. Gamble and Blake depart the White House to campaign for a new slate of presidential electors aligned with their aims.
A temporary restraining order bans county clerks from printing on the official primary ballot any Republican candidates for presidential electors who will support Roosevelt if elected. Filed by Fred Stanley and State Senator F Dumont Smith, the case sets a hearing in Hutchinson on July 22. Eight electors named earlier said they will not support Taft if elected.
Washington July 17 The Senate adjourned amid signals of a new Democratic filibuster to push for an early vote on wool tariff revision. Senator Snioet and regular Republicans eyed a deal to vote on wool sugar and excise tax bills, but Progressive Republicans demand amendments. Also reported are results from Sioux City Denver Omaha Lincoln Topeka and St Joseph games.
In Washington on July 17, Senator Dorman of New York argued that a railroad faction behind Britain's stance influences Panama canal legislation and, with Senator Lodge, asserted the United States holds under the British treaty the right to grant free passage to vessels of American registry. Lodge favored rebates to American ships. O Gorman said the U S could grant passage if desired. Lodge warned the Hague court可能 ruling would be against the United States.
Mee Oklahoma July 17 a young man Joe M was shot and killed at Sophis Springs schoolhouse by J R over whom the girl Morris had linked with another youth. The quarrel began over the girl and led to a fight with Morris returning to the scene where Barnes ordered him to enter and then fired.
Advices report Mrs. Pearl Malloy drowned in the South Fork of the Llano river near the Edwards Kimble county line during a camping trip from Eden. Six women entered the water for a bath, six struggled, heroes saved five, and Malloy became the victim while attempting a rescue. The body was transported via auto through Junction and Menard to Eden.
Washington July 17 The House passed a bill to create the Department of Labor with the Secretary in the president’s cabinet. The measure has long been pressed by organized labor.
The American gasoline launch Bonita from Seattle was seized off Vancouver Island after a running duel with the fishery protection cruiser Newington. Shots were exchanged and the Newington rammed the Bonita to force surrender. the cruiser delivered the seized vessel to port.
The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that a state-wide prohibition measure must go to voters in the upcoming November general election. The decision allows petitions to be filed at different times with the aggregate names counted if the same matter appears on all sheets, and finds no conflict with local option provisions.
Ten car loads of eggs were shipped from Temple Texas to northern markets. Each car carried 400 cases totaling 120 900 dozen in the shipment.
Texas banks report a net increase of 317500 in the April to June period. Total capital across banks and trust companies stands at 25160500 with surplus and undivided profits totaling 7338288. Reserves on demand deposits indicate a strong liquidity position.
Hon Eb F Looney of Greenville Texas candidate for attorney general spent Wednesday here promoting his bid and visiting with old Hunt County friends who number many in the county.
The Third annual convention of the Midstate Textile Manufacturers Association convened at the Louisville Country Club. Speakers included Philip S. Turley on Costs System and Captain Paul J. Marrs on Experiences in the Purchase of Cotton.
Swisher County marked its twenty second anniversary with a picnic featuring candidate speeches. Judge R Walker Hall of Amarillo urged re election of court personnel while County Attorney R E Underwood supported Judge W F Romney in the gubernatorial race. They planned to speak in Canyon that evening.
In Colonia Oaxaca Sonora on July 17 federal troops looted the Haymore Brothers store taking several hundred dollars in goods and $200 in cash from Millard Haymore Jr. This is the second Mormon area looted after Colonia Morelos. Government officials promised an inquiry though no action is reported.
General Orozco stated he is undecided when he will leave Juarez or when the city will be evacuated but before Federals arrive from Chihuahua. No resistance will meet the Federal entry and the rebel garrison may be moved southwest along the Mexican Northwestern railroad toward Cassa Grandes.
Texas National Guard Battery A First Field Artillery under Captain F A Logan reached Fort Worth Tuesday afternoon. The unit marched up Main Street to Marine Park and camped, drilling and organizing in a businesslike fashion. The battery includes eighty seven officers and men, 111 horses, three escort wagons, a battery wagon and a forage wagon.
