A rowboat picket line on the Columbia River stopped a tug with logs bound for a non union Ridgefield mill. Two men aboard the rowboat explained they represented the picket line and Captain Clyde Carpenter refused passage and tied up the tug.
Pike County states attorney Merrill Johnston said Rev. C. E. Newton admitted striking Mrs. Dennis Kelly with a hammer and tossing her body into the Mississippi River after a car altercation. He reportedly confessed in the Pike County jail after two days of denials.
A mob of more than 500 unemployed men stormed the Works Progress Administration offices in San Antonio on July 15 demanding work. They pounded on doors and chanted for jobs before police drove them off as they surged toward the rear where applications are received.
The U S Coast Guard announced 35 successful candidates for admission to the Coast Guard Academy at New London Conn. among them are Charles C Richardson of Pecan Gap Texas and Robert A Laverty of Lubbock Texas who will enter the academy next month.
Amarillo and vicinity expect a partly cloudy afternoon with fair conditions across West Texas along the 100th meridian. New Mexico also trends fair with little temperature change. yesterday’s temperatures ranged around highs near 98 and lows near 36.
The Senate sent to the White House a compromise measure authorizing 85 million dollars over three years to help tenants become farm owners. The plan funds 10 million this year, 25 million next year, and 50 million in year three at three percent interest, with immediate title but five year resale restrictions. It also provides 10 million for retirements of submarginal land and 20 million in each following year, with farming-practice covenants until loans are repaid. Backers expect President Roosevelt to sign. passage followed an earlier plan to defer major action until after Senator Robinson’s funeral.
The Bankhead Jones Farm Ten Ant Bill, sent to the President after House and Senate approval, includes section three funding land purchases for recreation and conservation. The measure is seen aiding the Panhandle Water Conservation Association program with Carl Hinton in Washington for consideration.

James E. Doyle a 45 year old seaman evacuated to New Orleans by coast guard patrol boat and airplane earlier in the week died today from head injuries received aboard the steamship Beacon Oil of the Standard Oil Company at Bay Town Texas doctors announced the death.
Visitors from the plains converge on Tulia for Swisher County's 47th birthday with an Amarillo Chamber delegation leaving at 8:30 AM. A parade opens at 10, polo between Plainview and Tulsa, a 12 PM barbecue, a 2 PM rodeo, 5 PM old time saddle pony races, and a street dance with Amarillo Maverick Club demonstrations.
Gas explosion claimed twenty miners in Borger and sparred a local violence case as Bert Meyers faced aggravated assault charges. In Washington, Congress prepared a state funeral for Senate Majority Leader Robinson with full attendance by President, cabinet, military chiefs and foreign envoys. The service in the Senate chamber will feature a scripture reading and a sermon, followed by Robinson’s burial and transport to Little Rock.
Rescue teams emerged from flame seared tunnels in Sullivan Indiana and confirmed 20 miners killed in a gas explosion at the Baker coal mine. Nine others were injured, three critically, while 174 escaped unharmed.
Don Teel of Fort Worth announces an endurance flight starting August 1 at Meacham Field. He will take off circle and land repeatedly until the plane or he fails, with ground refuels, as part of Aviation Day at Fort Worth Frontier Fiesta.
The Spanish insurgent cruiser Almirante Cervera shelled an unidentified British merchant ship attempting to enter Santander harbor. The vessel was forced to leave Spanish waters, escorted by the armed merchantman Jupiter Galerno. Yesterday the Almirante Cervera seized the British steamer Morton bound for Santander. The British government warned merchants against entering Santander Harbor.
Decatur Alabama July 15 a ninth jury convicted Clarence Norris in the Scottsboro case and sentenced him to death for an alleged gang attack on two white women nine defendants were tried with Norris previously condemned but saved by the US Supreme Court each time.
Two men armed with a machine gun stole a new car from an agency near Fordyce Arkansas and escaped after disarming a deputy sheriff. Assistant state police chief Bob LaFollette said they may be Texas convicts tied to prior robberies in Weiner and Clarksville. He suspected the machine gun handler might be Charles Chapman, who fled Eastham prison farm in Texas last week.
San Angelo inspectors seized 324 bottles of beer at the country club after a misdirected sale to a visitor. Nevelle Haley was fined 25 dollars plus costs in county court for selling beer without a license. One bottle was allegedly sold to the wrong person during a tournament visit.
ADA Okla July 15 21 year old Baird Markham Jr son of Gen Baird Markham president of the American Petroleum Institute was believed held as a hostage by Pete Traxler and two others fleeing a Texas prison farm as a posse closed in. Jack McClure was reported safe. A cordon of officers surrounded Atwood area south of Holdenville in the Traxler pursuit.
A. B. Sanders announces resignation as Littlefield Public Schools superintendent after four years to become superintendent of Donna Texas schools. The board will name his successor on August 9.
July 15 report from New York notes three Robins Dry Dock and Repair Company workers in Brooklyn were struck and injured while arriving for the shift. Officers kept order as the plant remained ringed by pickets.
Austin reports Warden Morgan Miller resigned after being held in contempt by a Willacy County court in the Louis Lamadrid investigation. Gov. Allred raises the Blanton reward to 1,500 dollars for information on Luther and John Blanton bodies last seen near King Ranch. The governor pledged protection for informants as the investigation continues with Col. Carmichael and Ranger Capt. Bill McMurray.
Earl Ward 21 of Clayton New Mexico died after his truck crashed into the rear of a Moran Drilling Company vehicle one half mile north of Dumas. He was taken by Boxwell Brothers ambulance to a Dumas hospital where he died shortly after arriving. Ward worked for Sinclair Refining Company and investigators suggest sleep at the wheel. Funeral services will be held in Clayton with time to be announced.
In London July 15 Labour Leader Clement Attlee accused Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden of surrendering to Fascist powers during a Commons debate on the British plan to reform the European non intervention patrol in Spain. Attlee attacked Eden for proposing limited belligerent rights for Franco and the Spanish government, and for Italy and Germany backing such moves.
Brownsville Herald reports a Mexican aviation strike may halt Pan American Airways flights between Mexico City and the United States this Sunday. Pan American officials in New York declined to comment. If the strike proceeds, planes from Brownsville will fly to Guatemala City with mail and freight.
