Mrs. T. W. Tomlinson recalls Swisher county origins from 1886 settlement to 1906 Santa Fe railroad arrival. She notes early pioneers, first officers, Tulia's founding, town landmarks, and harsh prairie life, including droughts, wolves, and community growth culminating in annual county birthday celebrations.
Swisher County has had seven sheriffs in its 13 37 years. Frank Scott was the first, serving six years, followed by Frank Britain, then G C Hutchison, A Conner, Mack Crawford, and Gilroy Porter. The present sheriff is T W Walters.
Mack Crawford of Tulsa owns a $50 and a $10 bill issued June 9, 1837 by the Republic of Texas bearing Sam Houston's signature. The bills came from his father, a Texas independence hero, and include a sheep skin $10 note among the few surviving specimens. Crawford and his brother were Swisher county pioneers.
A religious body notes the passing of Secretary Brother John Cresens who served with devotion and humility. The resolution praises his faithful ministry and selfless service to the church, acknowledging his long years of quiet, diligent work.
In 1890 rumors of Indian raids drew settlers from the South Plains to Tulia. A drunken stage-driver spread word of massacre, prompting trenches, fortifications, and overnight guards around the courthouse and White Hotel. After two days the tale unraveled and settlers returned home.
The State of Texas orders the sheriff to summon Matt Heslop Z Hoensteine and unknown heirs by publication in Potter County or adjacent county if no local newspaper. They must appear at the next District Court term in Amarillo on the second Monday in August 1927 in case No. 5705 regarding removal of a deed cloud and quiet title with writ of restitution and damages.
The San Jacinto Methodist Church expresses deep sorrow for a church member’s untimely death. It states the loss to the church and community and directs copies to the bereaved family, the Amarillo News, and church minutes. Committee members include C. T. Davis, W. M. Curl, and W. T. Williford.
Tulsa July 15. T A Gray the first Swisher County tax assessor recalls the 1890 tax rate of half a cent per acre and land values around two dollars an acre. He helped organize Crosby and Swisher counties and built the county's first windmill in 1887.
Notice to creditors of George Washington Tilley of Amarillo Texas that he was adjudged a bankrupt July 18 1927. First meeting of creditors will be held July 28 1927 at 10 a.m. to prove claims appoint a trustee and examine the bankrupt. BEN H STONE Referee in Bankruptcy.
Commendation to publish this citation weekly for four consecutive weeks before the return day in the 108th District Court of Potter County. The suit, No. 5457, involves F. M. Lefforge as plaintiff and Mary Lou Graham J F Conklin H C Smythe H C Holman Wyatt Hester as defendants over a note of 425 dollars from 1926 with a mechanic’s lien on property in Amarillo Texas. Filing dates include April 6 1927 and July 8 1927 with a July 20 1926 note, interest and attorney fees, and alleged default.
District Court of Potter County issues writ against Bruce Large, defendant in No. 5707, based on a petition filed July 8 1927 by Niles Moser Cigar Company claiming unpaid goods totaling 725.70 plus interest and costs. The court set the return for August 6 1927 in Amarillo.
Wiley Pollard Potter County Sheriff announces sale of Lot 2 Block 12 San Jacinto Heights Am arillo to satisfy judgments in favor of A L Ludden and G M Ledford against A J Wright and Florence L Wright. The sale occurs August 2 1927 between 10 am and 4 pm at the Potter County courthouse.
Ordinance authorizes levying assessments on abutting property to fund curb, gutter and brick paving on West Sixteenth Street from Hughes to Ong. City to notify owners, hold hearings, and allocate front foot charges with an eight percent interest rate and attorney costs if unpaid.
The Amarillo City Commission schedules a public hearing on August 2 1927 at 7 30 pm in City Hall to discuss street improvements and assessments. Notices will be published three times and mailed by registered letter where possible, with continued hearings as needed to ensure a full hearing for property owners, agents, attorneys and interested parties.
