U S jet fighters pushed deeper into North Vietnam not far from the Chinese border. Four F105s hit two trucks north of Dien Bien Phu, farther north than any previous strike. Casualties included two Marines killed and one wounded by a mortar misfire near Da Nang as Viet Cong attacked a beach landing party.
President Johnson faces a vacancy in the U N ambassador post after Stevenson's death with the General Assembly due in September. Francis T. P. Plimpton will act as chief of the U S mission until a successor is named. Former senator Henry Cabot Lodge was Eisenhower's prior nominee for the post.
Pasadena based reports say Mariner 4 may have captured pictures during its Mars flyby but signals conflicted over tape recorder operation. Dr. Pickering of Jet Propulsion Laboratory stated no reason to doubt that pictures were recorded despite the anomaly.
More than a thousand Texas Marine reservists are among 200000 men planned for call ups. The 4th Marine Division includes units in San Antonio Houston Austin Dallas Fort Worth and other Texas cities. McNamara warned of untapped Viet Cong strength as reserves face possible expansion of the draft.
Authorities search Trinity River bottoms and routes between Dallas and Fort Worth for James Waller 58 presumed victim of slain bank robber. Waller's keys were found on Cecil Abbey of Eugene Oregon who was shot during a downtown Texas Bank and Trust Co hold up wounding two guards.
The House approved stripping all silver from dimes and quarters and reducing half dollar content from 90 percent to 40 percent to conserve dwindling silver. The vote was 255 to 64 with Senate action pending. The plan would replace silver coins with copper cupro-nickel sandwiches.
