In Miami Florida on a two day hearing Melvin Lane Powers 23 nephew of a Texas millionaire was bound over to a grand jury on a first degree murder charge The state says Powers killed Jacques Messler 69 in his Key Biscayne apartment on July 30 1964 to cover an affair with Powers wife Candace The defense claims civil rights violations and cites a Texas investigator testimony about prior threats in Houston.
An explosion in a Bakersfield College chemistry lab injured 24 students, with 19 treated at Kern General Hospital and several in serious condition. William J. Fox, 19, suffered a mangled arm and internal injuries after mixing incompatible chemicals. Witnesses heard a cry of God forgive me as the blast shattered windows and knocked down lights.
