In Houston Mrs. Clara Berry, 45, a nurse and widow, repelled three peace activists who arrived in a new car to petition on her doorstep. She swung a mop to defend her property after one man grabbed the petition, and the trio fled. Her Navy son Lt. R. J. Agness holds the Navy Cross for heroism and served in Pearl Harbor and the Squalus disaster.
Two major rail unions the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors said they will seek a settlement with the National Mediation Board after July 15. They rejected a presidential fact finding board's 40 hour work week at 48 pay and will meet Friday to pursue a solution. W. P. Kennedy said they will not strike now and will act if railroads show no disposition to resolve the dispute.
James F. Byrnes defeated three opponents to capture the Democratic gubernatorial primary in South Carolina. Sen. Olin D. Johnston led Thurmond as precincts reported, with Johnston carrying industrial counties and Thurmond favored by farm areas in a heated party contest. About 500000 registered for the election.

San Antonio dispatch reports George Ochoa a 39 year old Laredo businessman charged with murder fled to Mexico amid a Laredo hotel killings last July 31. FBI said he was captured by Mexican police in Mexicali and held there awaiting extradition. The United States seeks his return, a process likely to trigger a prolonged legal battle.
Scatter showers and thundershowers expected across West Texas and New Mexico with little temperature change. Extended forecast through July 15 shows near normal highs around 92 to 98 with possible daily storms. Moonrise at 3 54 AM and prominent stars Regulus and Altair noted.
