American infantry sweeping roads and jungles near the Cambodian border report 54 more Viet Cong dead, lifting the toll to 238 since Saturday after a decoy unit lured the 272nd Regiment. With monsoon rains hindering, U.S. and Vietnamese forces pressed the hunt with helicopters, air strikes, artillery, flame throwers and armor. The fight occurred about 15 miles from the border and 45 miles northwest of Saigon as patrols reported only light contacts elsewhere. An Air Force F4C Phantom was shot down over North Vietnam, two crewmen bailing out off the coast near Dong Hoi.
In Fort Worth Texas a five year old owned .22 rifle is under ballistics testing after ten year old Janice Crandall was shot in the back near the Little League scoreboard at Blue Raider field Saturday evening during a game. Police questioned local families as the teenage shooter admitted firing the rifle around 5 30 p m amid prior complaints of youths shooting at a water tower in the area.
Chinese Foreign Minister Chen Yi accused the Kremlin of deploying troops along the Sino Soviet frontier in collusion with United States bombing raids on North Vietnam. He said Russia cooperates with imperialist encirclement of China and spoke at a mass rally in Peking.
After a year in captivity Nama a famed Seattle killer whale died when he became entangled in broken cables in his waterfront pen. Owner Ted Griffin said Nama had been mopey and had been ramming the nets at high speed. Scientists studied Nama and his carcass will be given to the Virginia Mason Research Center for analysis.
