The Western Cartridge Company plant at East Alton, five miles east of Alton, suffered a deadly blast this afternoon. 23 workers were injured, with 10 in minor condition. Eleven total fatalities include six women and five men. Cause undetermined as authorities assess the blast at the fireproof building where workers salvaged copper from shells.

Man Killed as Army Truck Hits Wagon in San Antonio

Fire damages business building at Floydada
Special to The News. Floydada July 10 Russell's Store and the City Barber Shop were damaged by fire Sunday morning at 11 o'clock to the extent of two thousand dollars. The fire started in a pile of hair sweepings in the rear of the barber shop and spread to the wooden partition between the tailor shop and barber shop when the porter who discovered the fire turned over a gallon of gasoline he was using in cleaning up the baths belonging to the City Barber Shop.
