Sgt. Robert Hetherwick of Alturas California receives a warm hug from his mother Mrs Helen Hetherwick at McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma Washington after arriving on the first plane of a troop airlift from Vietnam. Mrs Hetherwick and her husband drove all night to greet their son.
American Beef Packers Inc of Oakland Iowa and Wheatheart Feeders Inc of Perryton announce merger talks. Frank R West and John O Pitts Jr say if agreed Wheatheart becomes a subsidiary but runs autonomously as a custom feedlot. A Texas plant with jet-capable runways is planned for dressed beef and fabrication.
Executives of the Panhandle Economic Program report more than 500 million will be generated this year from agricultural income in the 26 county Texas Panhandle area. Ed Garnett of Amarillo and Texas A&M specialist says the figure is based on a six month regional survey. A joint PEP and chamber meeting in Amarillo was scheduled to discuss coordinating county activities.
Cannon AFB receives the first 10 F-111A aircraft for the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing conversion. Col. Frederick Blessee of Nellis AFB will greet the fighters. The training detachment and about 100 personnel will stay under Nellis control while Cannon transitions from F-100 to the F-111.
Weather notes report clear to partly cloudy skies for Amarilla with little temperature change. Highs in the mid range and lows in the mid teens. Southerly winds around ten miles per hour.
The Dow Jones average fell 8.73 to 861.62 in a third straight decline this week as cautious investors stayed on the sidelines. The prior 1949 low was 869.76 on June 27, with the index at its lowest since April 1, 1968. Brokers said Tuesday’s drop, triggered by Treasury Secretary Kennedy’s remarks on possible wage and price controls, spooked investors.
President Nixon ordered a 20 000 person reduction in US troops and civilian workers at foreign bases to save money and shrink Americas overseas presence. About 14 900 military positions are affected, with exempt areas including Vietnam Korea and NATO regions. Further Vietnam reductions would come later under a separate program.
Noel W. Barnett of 1614 S Madison Apt 2 is accused of shooting Judy Carter Barnett whose body was found in a bedroom by police. Indictments allege armed robbery against Jerry L Armitage and Cathy Pasheal of Wichita for a car theft from an Amarillo dealer. Millard Dean Carr of 4426 Fannin was indicted for assault with intent to rape involving a 10 year old girl. bond was raised from 15000 to 50000 after Judge Mary Lou Robinson canceled the previous bond.
