A reader letter laments Amarillo Public Library shelves nearly empty with 89 000 books and only five days a week service. It urges six or seven days and about 17000 annual funding to acquire books and reopen fully for students and researchers.
Laura Hamner, a prominent regional historian and author of works on Texas history, turns 90 on July 17. She has written top radio sketches, contributed to newspapers for decades, and hopes her priceless archives be housed at West Texas State College to preserve local history for future generations.

Drew Ellis rushed from Perryton to Amarillo in his plane to help an 18 month old boy named Ammy Parker receive urgent eye surgery. He left his home Friday evening, landed near the hospital and rode with the family in the ambulance. Ellis said he stayed in an Amarillo motel and spoke softly during the 29 minute flight, noting he wanted to help a family he has known for a long time.
New York farmer William T. Smith drove a $6,100 Cadillac into Washington after accepting a $3,049 May subsidy payment for taking 104 of 262 feed corn acres out of production. He called farm programs silly and said he expects $3,663 more in fall. He blamed government controls for past fines and noted prior conservation payments.
Lt Char lene Suneson 27 will serve aboard the USS Mann becoming the first female Navy line officer to be assigned sea duty. Suneson says she is eager to prove women can perform sea roles as the Navy tests their effectiveness amid a male officer shortage.
The Coldstream Guards depart Kuwait Friday night for Bahrain Island base in the Persian Gulf. About 250 guardsmen fly out within hours of the completed buildup and after threats by Iraq's Premier Abdel Karim Kassem to seize Kuwait's wealth.
In New York the Soviet Union vetoed a British backed resolution seeking Kuwait's independence and withdrawal of British troops. The UN Security Council ended four days of debate without agreeing on action to resolve the dispute sparked by Iraq's claim to Kuwait. Soviet delegate Platon Morozov cast the deciding vote.

The Air Force fired Discoverer 26 a 81 foot rocket carrying a 3 pound space mail parcel destined for Hawaii. The capsule will eject within four days for recovery near Hawaii if orbit succeeds. Four recruits were killed and 15 injured when lightning struck a group of 20 Fort Benning soldiers during rifle training at a remote range. The base said the storm pushed troops to seek cover when a tree was struck and the bolt ricocheted into the group, with first aid and artificial respiration provided by officers and a helicopter rescue squad arriving about 15 minutes later. The victims were members of the 9th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division.

Berlin authorities ordered about 50,000 East Germans who commute to West Berlin jobs to obtain special permission to continue work. The move, tied to an eight year old law, raised Western fears of a border closure as thousands flee to freedom weekly.
