Rhodes Named Amarillo Police Chief After Exam Selection
Rusty Rhodes is officially appointed chief of the Amarillo Police Department by the City Commission. He has served as acting chief since January and ranked among the top three in a two day exam process conducted June 27 and July 6. Rhodes, 36, from Potter County, is a longtime Amarillo resident with a 1987 marriage to Ruth Hamby and three children. He joined the force in 1942, served in the Navy, rose through the ranks to captain and chief of detectives, and has lived at 4008 E 12th.

Dumas Crash Claims Unknown Man
An unidentified man was killed in a single vehicle crash on Highway 287 one mile south of Etter near Dumas at about 10:30 p.m. The wreckage showed a Colorado plate and a prescription labeled Tom Turner found in the victim’s pocket. Police searched the area for identification as the ambulance arrived. The victim wore a khaki shirt and Army twill trousers with no socks.

Mysterious Submarine SOS Hoax Triggers Atlantic Search
