In Slater Missouri July 7 union shop men depart amid preplanned movements, sparking fear over possible troop dispatch. L Marquette of Chicago and Alton RR awaits Governor Hyde on troops while key pumps and coal supply dwindle. Kidnapped men and mobilizing Missouri artillery add to tense, unfolding crisis.
At the Hague conference on Russia property, Maxim Litvinoff outlined Russia’s concessions to foreigners and restitution plans. British delegate Sir Phillip Lloyd Greame urged clearer assurances, while M Krassin proposed setting aside contentious issues to seek common ground and mutual advantage.
A telegram from G. H. Culp, a prominent Panhandle resident, reports Thomas leading in the North Texas senatorial race. The message notes broad support from East Texas counties and identifies Thomas as a top candidate in the region, with Cullen also leading other contenders.
The Vicksburg Herald reports it secured an injunction to stop Sunday blue laws from barring printing and circulation of the Sunday paper after midnight Saturday. The paper had suspended work on last Sunday's issue due to enforcement of Sunday closing laws.
Andre Querbes of First National Bank Shreveport announced at a Caddo Bossier farm bureau meeting that Louisiana bankers led by First National Bank Shreveport and Hibernia Bank New Orleans are prepared to advance 10 million dollars or more to finance members of the Cotton Growers Co operative Association. The Nueciés formed at the meeting as part of the effort.
Washington reports Republican primaries shifting focus from North Dakota to Ohio Michigan and Wisconsin. Thompson backs governor bid in Ohio aided by Harding while Knight attacks administration. Wisconsin Senate fight looms LaFollette opposition could shake finance panel. Michigan sees Townsend vs Kelley with Ferris looming, and Texas heads to the next primary.
Washington July 7 Medals will be awarded at civilian military training camps this year to one student in each company at each camp designated by his commanding officer as the best all around soldier in the unit The decorations at war done last year will be provided by the military training camps association and the awards will be made by regular army or reserve corps officers in command of the camps.
Missouri railroads warn passenger service will fall unless Governor Hyde protects striking shopmen. C N Whitehead of Missouri Kansas Texas says many workers quit or delay returning due to threats. Chicago Saint Louis and Quincy reports show large scale back and shop closures. About 1,500 shopmen strike affecting Missouri Pacific and Missouri Kansas Texas shops in Sedalia.
Governor Arthur M. Hyde stated Missouri is not a strikebreaker in a telegram to Missouri Pacific Rail Road shopmen. He pledged no state troops if violence and property damage are avoided, urging strikers to support authorities and maintain order during the strike.
Austin July 7 Special to The News reports the attorney general’s department issued an opinion stating that paying a city poll tax is not necessary to vote in primary elections. The ruling extends the general rule to all cities and towns, regardless of population, including towns over 5,000.
Railroad commissioner Clarence E. Gilmore leaves July 8 for Washington to attend a July 12 conference called by Interstate Commerce Commission Chairman Machard to discuss possible suspension of operations of the Kansas City Mexico and Orient Railroad. Governor Neff will appoint him to represent Texas. He warns it would be a public calamity to abandon the line and will urge a plan to keep it operating.
The Silk well is to be drilled for oil and is being prepared to drill into the oil sand sometime Monday. The Holmes McIlroy and McGee or Smith Capers well is to be shot Monday, with W H Holmes traveling to Wichita Falls to obtain the explosive. The charge will be set several hundred feet above the hole bottom in the sand. Oil sprayed over the derrick weeks ago was later cased off.
Special to The News Slaton Texas July 7 The Rev J P Hardesty pastor of the Baptist Church received a threatening note dated July 4 1922 from an anonymous signer warning him to leave Slaton county in ten days or be harmed. Hardesty plans to respond from the pulpit calling out the attackers while signaling his move and drawing a line between crooks and righteousness in the town.
The Senate passed a bill to create a 2,006 acre all year park on the Mescalero reservation in New Mexico. The interior secretary will select land within the reservation for park purposes for Indian benefit, with no federal appropriation required, aiming to offer a recreation site for nearby states. Senator Bursum, NM Republican, stated the measure uses existing funds and serves nearby residents.
In Washington on July 7 Senator Walsh Democrat Massachusetts reported that seven hundred of the 2087 amendments to the tariff measure had been disposed of since April 20. He noted fifty five days with the bill before the Senate since May 1 and an average of 14 amendments disposed of per day.
Washington July 7 The Republican bid to invoke cloture on the administration tariff bill failed 45 to 35 in the Senate with Democrats unanimously opposing and five Republicans also voting against the motion. Senator La Follette of Wisconsin led the attack as a member of the committee that reported the measure.
Sayre Oklahoma July 7 Ten million feet of gas were brought in at the Barker well three miles south of Sayre. Gas began flowing at a depth near 2730 feet. The well started over a year ago with 5 inch casing being set as drilling continues. Acreage nearby valued at about 385 dollars per acre. The site lies on the same uplift as Texas Panhandle field.
Reports to foreign legations say Dr. Yat Sun Sen regains prestige in Canton and former supporters rally to him. Legation informants foresee inevitable further fighting near Canton between Sun’s forces and Chen Chiung-Ming’s faction, who deposed Sun on June 16.
The convention adjourned as William B. Owen of Chicago Normal College was named president. Delegates endorsed the Towner bill, supported training in American citizenship and permanent tenure for teachers, backed retirement funds, and opposed any salary reductions. J. W. Crabtree of Washington, D. C., was reelected secretary as membership surpassed 116,000.
Randell Harvey, attorney for the Kansas Court of Industrial Relations, swore complaints against three strikers in Topeka and two in Ottawa for picketing in violation of the industrial court law. Additional warrants were issued for the Topeka shop federation president and secretary treasurer. Warrants to be served tomorrow, says T. J. Hurley.
In Murphysboro Kentucky on July 7 J L Reynolds six years old and his daughter-in-law Mrs Frank Reynolds were killed when a wagon they rode in was struck by a passenger train near Berg today.
Chicago July 7 The first week of the railway shopmen strike ended with sporadic violence in several regions. Troops prepared to quell trouble in Illinois and soldiers requested in other states. Union officials railroad executives and the United States Railroad Labor Board maintained firm stances as the walkout began July 1.
New Orleans July 7. Fred J. White superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad at Harahan was assaulted at Carrollton Avenue and the Yazoo Mississippi Valley crossing. One white man and three Black workers were shot as clashes between striking rail workers and company men escalated. Police arrested two men, Conrad Hydephole and George Lenzner, for assault and battery. The three Black workers on a nearby train were attacked and shot as they left the train. about twenty five shots were exchanged. No arrests were made for those shootings. A grocery clerk Vincent Palao was hit by a stray bullet. The strike and related responses drew statements from labor leaders and the Railroad Labor Board about rights and procedures during the walkout.
Rain at Tucumcari July 7 ends the extended drought in parts of the valley. Crops are reported in good condition and indications point to more rainfall across the section.
W N Blanton was unanimously elected secretary manager of the rejuvenated Panhandle Plains Chamber of Commerce. He will operate from Amarillo City Hall while guiding 26 counties and 18 more expected to join. The group, debt free, aims to expand trade efforts across grain, cattle, cotton and other shipments with Hamlin Palmer directing traffic.
