Allied dispatches report a naval engagement in the Kula Gulf where ten Japanese warships were defeated with six possibly sunk and four damaged. The clash adds to Pacific theater tensions as Allied sources claim heavy losses for Japan.
Allied fighters and bombers strike Sicily Sardinia and Italy bases in a two day campaign. The U S Flying Fortresses claim 83 Axis planes down and 56 destroyed in Sicily and Sardinia with a record individual shoot by a gunner. Liberators also bombed Messina ferry terminal dropping 375000 pounds of explosives.
Khiva Temple of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine will host about 80 people at a Wednesday cowboy breakfast in the Crystal Room of the Palmer House. Guests include Shrine officials from Canada Mexico Canal Zone Hawaii and nearby regions along with Chicago editors led by Silliman Evans. Mayor Joe Jenkins will invite North American nobles to attend Khiva Temple's Pan American ceremonial in November and assist in the fall ceremony planning.
CHUNGKING July 7 Generalissimo Chiang Kai shek marked the sixth anniversary of China’s war with Japan by pledging that Japan’s defeat cannot take more than two years. He said Allied advances threaten Japanese gains on land sea and air and urged a united front as North Africa’s victory keeps lines open. The anniversary message promised a seventh year of decisive offensives and ongoing Allied victories.
In a tumultuous session the Senate voted 36 to 28 to ban any subsidies to lower retail food prices. The move was part of a measure to extend the Commodity Credit Corporation, amid Roosevelt vetoes and prior House actions on CCC borrowing and operation through Jan 1 with higher credit authority.
Allied headquarters reported a sea battle in the Kula Gulf near New Georgia and Kolombangara with six Japanese ships probably sunk and four damaged. The U S cruiser was sunk and a destroyer was beached and later damaged during the July 5 6 actions as American dive bombers scored direct hits.
Amarillo Jaycees to sponsor a Jallopy Parade meeting at the Chamber of Commerce to organize a city wide war scrap drive. H H Shaw and Jack F McKinney note parade concepts from Decatur Illinois and San Antonio, with army participation and prizes for oldest jaloppy and a Jallopy Queen.
The Civil Aeronautics Board and Army Air Forces A T Command grant final approval to Braniff Air Lines for immediate service linking Amarillo Pueblo Colorado Springs and Denver and a San Antonio Laredo leg. Denver leg to start after radio and facilities work by Aug 1 or possibly July 21, with further expansion to Mexico via Laredo and Brownsville gateways.
Second New Georgia island comes under Allied control as Navy marks a signal victory in Kula Gulf. China enters the seventh year of war. Allied bombers destroy 51 Nazi fighters in Italian patrols. Russians absorb a German offensive blow while RAF raids over France knock out seven fighters.
The Amarillo area shows little temperature change on Wednesday with moderate winds. In New Mexico, no major temperature shifts expected with widely scattered thundershowers in the afternoon. Sunrise at 6 39 AM, sunset 9 04 PM.
RAF fighters on sweep over Northern France and the French coast downed seven German fighters. Five were shot by Polish pilots and two by Canadian pilots in a large Spitfire formation.
