ALAMOGORDO July 3 A heavy truck swerved into oncoming traffic on U S 54 during peak hours. State policeman Bill Allen stopped the truck after a chase. The driver, visibly upset, said he prayed and saw his partner not driving. He was taken to a hospital for observation.

He said a stand will have to be made, though not for the military to decide when. He agreed with Rep. Horace Seely Brown that for now the only alternative is to hold the line.
Reports from Havana say a rumor of an assassination attempt on Raul Castro aboard a Soviet steamer in Santiago Harbor circulated for over a week. The claim claimed he was seriously wounded and Fidel visited his bedside, but no official comment was available and Raul appeared in public afterward.

A head on crash on Highway 84 near Muleshoe claimed the life of 25 year old Mrs. Loraine Parker and her 17 month old son Allen Ray Parker. Three others including the mother’s daughter Lillian Parker and fiancée Judy Allen were seriously injured. Joe Neil Sparkman of Slaton suffered multiple injuries in the other car. The crash occurred at 3 45 p m three quarters of a mile northwest of Muleshoe. The incident remains under investigation with witnesses unavailable.
Santa Fe Railway announces the retirement of Guy RR. Buchanan general manager for its Western Lines with Amarillo headquarters effective Aug 1. Francis N. Stuppi of Chicago is named general manager at Amarillo and Warren R. Henry of Galveston to succeed Stuppi as assistant to the operating vice president in Chicago. T. W. Goolsby moves from Amarillo to succeed Henry as assistant general manager at Galveston. All promotions take effect Aug 1. Buchanan will be 49 years and 11 months with the company.
Monterey beat Amarillo 10 to 1 while Veracruz topped Victoria 1 to 0 and Ardmore won 10 to 3 over Pueblo in 10 innings. San Antonio defeated Poza Rica 4 to 2 in 12 innings. Austin edged Mexico City Tigers 4 to ? Tulsa topped Mexico City Reds 5 to ? In the American League New York shut out Cleveland 6 to 0. Detroit crushed Boston 62 to 2-8. Baltimore beat Washington 2 to 0. Los Angeles defeated Minnesota 4 to 2. Kansas City beat Chicago 8 to 7. In the National League Pittsburgh and Chicago were rain postponed. Milwaukee won 3 to 4 against Philadelphia. St Louis led Los Angeles with unspecified score. Cincinnati 3 defeated San Francisco.
