Three Killed as Train Hits Family Truck in Donna Texas

A freight train struck a family truck at a grade crossing near Donna Texas killing Mrs R A Yaws 50, Juanita Yaws 15, and Cleatus Blancet 12 instantly. R A Yaws suffered internal injuries but was expected to survive while another seven year old rode with neighbors in a second car. The truck bed was demolished and debris flew about 400 yards.

Two Oklahoma Girls Scale 120 Foot Water Tower in Booker

Two young cousins from near Beaver Oklahoma climbed a 120 foot water tower in Booker. Their father Chalmers Strong briefly left them unattended to fetch machine parts, prompting a rescue by local volunteers. The girls were unharmed and unshaken by the escapade.

Pampa Area Ships 400 Cars of New Wheat

The Pampa wheat territory shipped about 400 cars of the 1931 grain crop Saturday night from Pampa and nearby towns. Harvest is about half complete as rain and recent showers hinder combines. No grain entered the city Thursday or Friday and only a small amount arrived yesterday. Continued on Page 9.

Amarillo Typo graphical Union decided Sunday to buy tickets worth 100 dollars for the opening event at the International Coliseum to be built at the Tri-State Fair grounds. Local officers fully endorsed the financing plan for the structure.

Nation tallies Fourth death toll at Independence Day celebration

The nation marks its 155th Independence Day with 270 lives lost across regions. Mid-Atlantic led with 62 deaths, fireworks fatalities total six, drownings 109 including 17 in Los Angeles, 96 highway crash deaths, and 83 airplane fatalities in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest. Oklahoma reports a freight wreck and a shooting as part of the toll.

Increase in Plains farm values shown in census report

Oldham Gray Lynn Floyd counties in the Texas Panhandle show varied changes in farm land values from 1920 to 1930. Oldham up about 3 million overall with 137 farms, Gray up about 1 million, Lynn nearly doubles to 18.7 million, while Floyd declines by about 4 million.

Oil States Committee Head To Arrive For Amarillo Meet

Cicero R. Murray head of the Oil States Advisory Committee will arrive in Amarillo on Tuesday for a committee meeting that day. The first session at 10 am will be at the Chamber of Commerce offices followed by a luncheon. The oil and gas division will host visiting oil men as the 10 state committee discusses industry stabilization.

Robins and Jones Await Refueling Plane for Tokyo Flight

Fort Worth aviators L. Robbins and H. S. Jones await confirmation as their refueling plane, flying from Edmonton to Fairbanks, has not reported arrival. They plan a non stop Pacific leg to Tokyo after refueling over Fairbanks, weather permitting. A White Horse message indicated the plane had not reached there as of six P.M. local time.

Mayor Basks In City's Fourth Of July Saneness

Mayor Ernest O. Thompson praised the Fourth of July as a model of civic order saying it should be without accidents fires from fireworks and drunkenness arrests. He called it commendable and a record for citizenship in a brief Sunday interview.

Seek Woman in Houston Slaying

Houston July 5 A statewide search was under way for the woman named as the slayer in the dying statement of R L Urquhart 33 who was shot to death yesterday on a fashionable residential street as funeral services were held. Detectives Langdon and Myers scoured San Antonio for the woman after a tip she left her home for the city.

Record Southern California rip tide tragedy heightens warning

Waves swept the south shore with hundreds of lifeguards receiving frantic calls as a disastrous rip tide alleged to be the worst in a decade claimed seventeen lives or missing along Los Angeles beaches. Clothing of a 15 year old boy was found and several others were reported missing including a girl at Playa Del Rey and a man at Long Beach. Lifeguards from San Pedro to Laguna Beach warned bathers to stay out of the surf as conditions raged near Brighton Beach Terminal Island.

Golf Star and Five Others Die in Plane Crash

George Ritchie of San Francisco and five others perished when a sightseeing plane from Lucerne, California crashed into a mountainside after takeoff. Killed were Jackie Kerrigan Leon Keller Louis M Becker 55 and his fiance Mrs Zigmunda Lax 35 as well as pilot William Hoffmann. The crash occurred when the motor cut out about two miles from Lucerne.

Plains Wheat Harvest Goes Into Last Lap

Wheat harvest in the Panhandle moves into its final stretch as good weather continues. The local weather bureau expects a brief rainy spell after a four day spell ends. Farmers anticipate finishing fields today with about ten days more work on the North Plains. Amarillo reports a mild 85 degree day and a fair forecast for Monday.

Seek Three Youths In Mystery Attacks

Grady County officers search for three youths suspected of hurling heavy stones at two drivers along the Oklahoma City Chickasha highway near Tuttle. The victims H L Mcalvaney 28 of Oklahoma City and Geborn Jones 26 of Okmulgee suffered serious head injuries and were treated at Tuttle and then Oklahoma City hospitals.

Hoover Seeks Unified American Stand on Debt Moratorium

President Hoover rejected a French plan granting unlimited powers to technical experts in formulating a debt moratorium. A memorandum outlining the American position was cabled to France as Mellon prepared to present it in Paris. Hoover shortened his Rapidan vacation and returned to Washington amid Franco American talks.
