Dr. Walter Splawn, Texas railroad commissioner, unanimously elected president of the University of Texas. He will be paid 10000 annually with 2500 for travel, and will reside in the president's house.
Dr. Walter Splawn, a Texas Railroad Commission member, was unanimously chosen by the board of regents to lead the University of Texas as its president. A native Texan, he was born on a farm in Arlington on June 16, 1883.
Survivors of the sidewheel steamer Three Rivers report at least three dead and nine missing after the Chesapeake Bay fire near Cove Point. The Baltimore and Chesapeake line carried about 850 passengers. many injured, including several seriously. A Baltimore girl and a negro deck hand drowned, another burned to death. five boys from the Evening Sun newsboys band were believed lost.

Galveston July 5 Fort Crockett transformed from quiet to an armed camp with over 6000 Texas national guardsmen arriving for a ten day training. Headquarters are active two brigades and leaders on site awaiting Major General A Hulen who is due tonight. The camp impressed by military precision as units arrived from trains, described as fine looking “blue of use.”
Amarillo unveils its first annual Pure Food Show and Industrial Exposition at 705 707 Polk Street with an 8 pm opening led by Mayor Fe. 8. Blasdel. A coronation at 8:30 pm crowns the queen whose identity remains secret until the moment. Five afternoon and six night sessions run through next Saturday, with programs featuring a different Amarillo Advertising Club member each session.
