Fire Destroys Home reports fireworks were blamed for a series of blazes across Amarillo and surrounding areas on the first night, prompting a statewide alert and investigations.
A gunman hijacked a bus at Kennedy International Airport holding hostages for nine hours. Two killed, several wounded, including a child hurled from the bus. Negotiations collapsed. police ended the siege with the hijacker in custody as hostages were freed. The gunman, described as a Spanish-speaking black man, demanded 6 million dollars and air transport out of the country.
Bob Wright and wife Lora decorate their shop window with a Christmas tree ready for the next season. Wrights continue a quirky July Fourth prep tradition, keeping the tree up for maintenance six months. Local note ends with a festive greeting from WES IZZARD.
FBI ties two Oklahoma prison escapees to a crime spree involving the murder of Magazine Arkansas marshal Marvin K Richie and ranger Opal Mostly. Two Louisiana escapees and Purcell Oklahoma taxi driver James Short remain missing as authorities pursue charges and further links.
In Columbus on the Fourth of July demonstrators shouting anti Klan slogans stormed the state capitol podium. The melee injured four people including WBNS TV cameraman Jerry Coleman. Police arrested four participants and the Ohio Imperial Wizard Dale Reusch pledged to return in the fall amid desegregation busing tensions.
London reports say Pakistan's armed forces overthrew the government and placed Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and all leaders in temporary custody. Radio Pakistan, monitored by BBC, said the takeover occurred at 11:30 p.m. EDT with troops guarding major installations amid a four month crisis that left about 350 dead.
Americans marked the Bicentennial close with picnics parades and fireworks from New York to San Francisco. Boats glided into New York Harbor as a 50 shot salute rang out while crowds in Los Angeles joined nude beach contests and in Washington a time capsule prepared for 2075 closure.
