A head on crash on Farm Road 600 north of Abilene during the Independence Day weekend killed eight people. Curtis Renfro 18 and Linda Sherman 18 died in the Abilene wreck, with four others in the two cars also injured or dead on arrival. The day’s wrecks raised Texas highway deaths toward the holiday total.
Wreck on a straight road killed Kathy Livingston 16 and injured Linda Sherman 16. Victims in the other car include Teresina Sherman 54 and Jeffry Sherman 13. Roddy Qualls rode with Linda Sherman as Haley described the collision. Cars smashed, some occupants ejected, one vehicle burned before Abilene firefighters put out the blaze.
Ballistics tests on a .32 caliber pistol found near Paris Texas may tie the Paris murder of a woman near Amarillo to the Paris couple slaying and five other fatal cases across Texas Colorado and Utah. Investigators say the weapon traced to a Dallas man and found by a child in Red River could prove ties to multiple killings, with results due today.
A cold Fourth of July across the Panhandle kept residents shivering with 50s and a record cold in Amarillo. Fireworks displays were muted by overcast skies and two house fires, including one in Plainview owned by Willie Chance, caused no injuries as storms dropped nearly an inch of moisture.
A 30 year old Amarillo man Max Brown died after a multi vehicle pileup on U S 87 287 south of the bridge over the Canadian River. Brown was struck after a cattle truck sideswiped three vehicles while he worked under his car. The crash occurred Tuesday night near Amarillo and he died at Northwest Texas Hospital shortly after.
The Associated Press reports widespread meat price increases across cities as wholesalers push costs higher. Store owners say they can no longer absorb the rise, with boneless rump roast and center cut pork chops up sharply. Shoppers note higher overall budgets and limited substitutions while grocers warn further increases are likely.
Poor weather and a brisk north wind forced the 19th annual Globe News Free Fireworks Show at Tri-State Fairgrounds to be postponed until nightfall. Norman Burnett of Enid Oklahoma, a longtime exhibitor, cited safety as the reason. The display, starting about 9 30 p m at Bigins Stadium, features Snoopy and Charlie Brown, Uncle Sam, the lunar rover, a mother elephant, Niagara Falls and more than 200 shells in an aerial portion. The event remains free and open to all.
Fallout shelters once built during the 1960s Cuban missile crisis now house wine cellars, fish tanks, and playrooms across New Jersey. Residents describe using shelters as relaxing, cool spaces with stoves, fridges, and storage, while officials note waning interest and few new constructions.
