The Supreme Soviet, with 1,517 members in two houses, meets next Thursday for its summer session. It stamps Communist Party proposals rather than drafting laws, amid expected Kremlin power signals and questions about policy shifts.
Mrs. James Halbert of Snyder reports a June 24 collision 10 miles from Amarillo on Washington Avenue. She and her three children, sister in law, and two nieces were bruised but not seriously hurt. She thanks the first responder, Mr. Baines of Dumas and his daughter Sandy, a WTSU student, the picnicgoing woman who bathed faces, the shirt donor, the helper who attended the 4-year-old, and all others at the scene. The family prays for their blessing.

The Santa Fe upgrades cabooses for crew comfort and rear-end cars for Pullman berths and services on the coast. Elmo Duke ponders luck and the Lord helps those who help themselves. Olsen Park Pete notes the new car buyer’s ignorance compared to grandpa. Wes Izzard ends with a sports quip about losing to be a good sport.
Young anglers 16 and under crowded Southeast Park Lake for a day long derby with $200 in cash prizes. Sponsors included the City Parks and Recreation Department KIXZ and KVILT as an estimated 1500 participants competed for prizes.
The Amarillo forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies with hot temperatures near 100 and light southerly winds. In a separate event Parks official Jim Brock says the tradition will continue in 1970. Denzil Eutley of 2717 Apache caught the tagged fish jaw number 302 and won 94 dollars, with Jim Koumalats, 3112 Apache, taking 50 dollars and Jim Maib, 4509 Princeton, earning 25 dollars for the top three prizes.
London AP reports Prince Charles danced all night with Lucia Santa-Cruz a 25 year old Chilean beauty and daughter of the Chilean ambassador. She is highly styled with two university degrees and a past engagement to Dutch diplomat’s son Michael Goedhuis. She attended a ball at the Duke of Northumberland’s home and later a dinner dance aboard the royal yacht Britannia with the prince and Princess Anne.
A 19 year old Borger man, Robert Lee King, died from a gunshot wound after allegedly fleeing officers during a felony check arrest. Patrolman Leslie Taylor said King lunged and ran before the fatal shot in the 300 block of Sixth Street. The incident is under grand jury review as Borger officials await further action.
Moscow rumors claim two unmanned Soviet rockets exploded on pads in aborted efforts to obtain moon soil samples. No official confirmation, but observers give some credence amid Apollo 11 countdown toward July 16. Newsmen asked cosmonauts at a U S embassy reception.
U S troops overran an enemy camp 27 miles northeast of Saigon and found it deserted after a fierce battle that damaged the base. Nine Americans were killed and 19 wounded in the daytime clash, while enemy losses were not known as defenders fled with their dead and wounded.
Thunderstorms skirted the Panhandle late Friday but failed to relieve the Fourth of July heat. Temperatures climbed to 100 in Amarillo and Lubbock by 5 p.m. with winds up to 40 mph. A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for parts of the Panhandle, Oklahoma, and southwest Kansas, though late night activity remained sparse.
The National Education Association and Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr join critics in condemning Nixon administration moves to ease public school integration timelines in the South. Sen Strom Thurmond calls for more than a simple freedom of choice while urging a return to September deadlines set by the Johnson era. The NEA urges reinstating the Health, Education and Welfare timetable as federal policy. Attorney General Mitchell and Welfare Secretary Finch announced the action. Georgia Governor Maddox offered limited comment on government and congressional delays in school decisions.
About 18 000 spectators filled Bivins Stadium for the 16th annual fireworks show after a concert by Amarillo Caprock and Tascosa high schools. Wes Izzard of the Daily News narrated the event with invocation by Rev. Clyde Cain and a U S Army Reserve color guard flag lowering.
