The first Fourth of July celebration in Fargo Springs Seward County Kansas in 1886 featured anvils firing musketry and public safety items, a free dinner for 800 to 1,000, a parade of calithumpians races and a social ball attended by over 100 couples. The Fargo Springs News described a day of flag displays speeches readings and songs with Miss Powell as organist and Z Wiley delivering the Declaration of Independence.

Four Die in Private Plane Crash Near Shattuck Oklahoma
Shattuck Oklahoma a private Beech plane crashed north of Shattuck Airport killing four including Wichita Eagle sports editor Paul A Lightner and photographer Gary A Humphries. The victims identified tentatively as Lightner 65 Jacobs Jr 32 Mrs Jacobs 29 and Humphries 28. The craft originated in Amarillo Texas with a flight plan from Prescott Arizona en route to Wichita Kansas and was to land near Gage Oklahoma. The plane nose dived and burned on approach officials said. Lightner had covered Olympic trials in California and served with the Eagle since 1919.
