Letters from readers in Dalhart Cleveland Canyon Houston and other Texas towns argue that Texas remains the greatest state in spirit and brains despite losing land area. They joke about size versus quality and five-state division proposals while defending Texas identity.
About half of Amarillo’s 130000 residents were away yesterday for Independence Day celebrations. An equal number from across the Golden Spread filled in to keep homes and festivities running, restoring activity locally.
An Air Force C124 cargo plane crashed northeast of Johnston Island en route from Honolulu to Wake. Six crew members remain missing while three survivors were rescued by a Navy helicopter and later by a carrier Boxer crew. A rescue plane spotted life raft and Mae West near the scene as search continues.
The body of Dr. Carl Heath Kopf 56 pastor of the First Congregational Church in downtown Washington was found hanged in the church tower. Police recovered a clothline wrapper bearing God forgive me and a letter describing past nervous strain and plans to rest and complete a book titled Your Five Major Battles. The case is linked to his recent disappearance on Tuesday and follows a reported fatigue noted during a Sunday sermon.
Police said a Thomas H. MacDowell family of five and his mother were found dead from suspected poisoning in their Glen Ridge home. Marta MacDowell age 37 and Florence MacDowell 79 lay in beds along with two young sons Donald 5 and Robert 4 while MacDowell himself was missing. Neighbors reported a Fourth of July picnic nearby as relatives frantically checked in Chester and were interrupted by a call from ex chief William Higgins and his Alexandria family. Higgins called the event the worst thing to happen here and noted MacDowell Mae Dowell had worked for Sterling Drug Co. before moving to the suburban town. Continued on Page 2.
The Will Rogers Range Riders stage a holiday weekend rodeo tonight at 8 15 p m and Sunday at 8 30 p m in their arena north of Veterans Hospital on Highway 66. Producer L D Ward of Trinidad Colorado brings 50 bucking horses and over 20 bulls. Tickets available at the arena.
Downtown Waddy Week resumes at noon in the 600 block of Polk Street with Rusty McDonald and His Cowboys. The Marine Drums and Bugle Corps from NAS Memphis, Tenn. head the feature. Also on the program are Starlight Theater, stock car drivers, and their cars. tonight shuffleboard and table tennis in Amarillo parks. Ellwood Park hosts a big square dance led by Nathan Hale with Golden Spread teams expected.
Weather data shows Amarillo with 164 days of sun in 185 so far in 1958. Readings taken at 3 p.m. Friday note wind and visibility with partly cloudy sky and mixed conditions between Amarillo and Oklahoma City.
US Weather Bureau reports partly cloudy conditions with isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms in Amarillo and the Panhandle. Not as warm, highs near 70s. Eastern New Mexico expects scattered afternoon showers, highs 75 to 85, with a mix of sunshine or clouds and cooler Panhandle temperatures. Sunrise 6:38 a.m., sunset 8:05 p.m.
Albuquerque beat Amarillo while Colorado Springs won six to two and Pueblo trailed. Lincoln topped Sioux City and Des Moines won in one inning. Kansas City defeated Chicago, Boston beat Baltimore, Cleveland and Detroit won, New York lost heavily to Washington. Philadelphia edged Milwaukee and Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh. San Francisco defeated Chicago as Chicago Anieoeese echadulrd appears in the late edition.

The Globe News fireworks show at Amarillo Stadium drew large crowds with space themed pyrotechnics. The 25,000 seat venue was packed with officers directing traffic, and observers estimated 25,000 more outside.
