The Associated Press reports July Fourth traffic toll climbs to 115 deaths and 75 drownings, with 31 miscellaneous fatalities, pushing total violent deaths to 221. A Fox Lake train crash adds to the count as officials warn the final toll may near 150, far above pre holiday estimates.
A large Independence Day political rally in San Angelo, Texas, was washed out by a storm just before the start, forcing two of six gubernatorial hopefuls, Sen Price Daniel and former State House Speaker Reuben Senterfitt, to shift to television to deliver speeches. In other news, Nehru and Pakistan's Chandra Mohammed Ali plan face to face Kashmir talks in New Delhi tomorrow at the Indian Embassy.
Former President Harry S. Truman dismissed claims he and Averell Harriman were plotting to deny Adlai Stevenson the nomination. Truman called the convention wide open during a New York stroll while Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee said he remains in a strong second and will not strike political deals.
Western League results feature Amarillo 11 over Albuquerque 4 and Pueblo 16 over Colorado Springs 3 among others while Lincoln Topeka game noted in second rate. National League sees Brooklyn 15 over New York 2 and St Louis 6 over Milwaukee 4 with Chicago 5 over Cincinnati 4. American League lists Boston 7 over Kansas City 2 and Detroit 4 over Chicago 1 with Washington 10 over Baltimore 4.
The record notes Amarillo had 177 sunny days of 186 in 1955 with afternoon readings at 3 p.m. showing 15 mph winds and partly cloudy skies. Houston and Oklahoma City reports also show 15 mph winds with partly cloudy conditions.
The Will Rogers Range Riders Rodeo opened with color and action. Darrell Cribbs of Wildorado won first in bull riding while Bud Coffee of Morris led bareback riding and Nick LeCompte of Amarillo topped saddle bronc in the day’s events.
Fastest calf roping went to Sonny Hendricks of Clovis New Mexico in 13 seconds. Jack Walters of La Junta Colorado rodeoed a 9.7 second bulldogging time. Janet Dudley Perryton won barrel racing with 18.4, edging Mike Reid Silverton at 18.9. About 6 000 attended as cool weather mixed with late showers, with Sally Jim Skelton performing between events.
Severe thunderstorm forecast covers parts of Oklahoma Texas and Kansas along a wide band west of Childress to Enid Oklahoma. Pilots reported tornado sightings west of Wichita Falls and near Lamesa Amarillo area though none confirmed. Sheriff patrols watched funnels as landings were not observed and Memphis saw brief heavy rain in minutes.

The U S Weather Bureau predicts continued warmth with widely scattered thundershowers today and tomorrow, highs near 91 and 64 lows. Panhandle and South Plains expect partly cloudy skies with isolated storms. New Mexico shows scattered afternoon and evening thundershowers in northern mountains and east portions. Temperatures largely unchanged. Thursday highs 85 to 100.
