General MacArthur announced the Philippines are liberated and the campaign largely closed after a 250 day battle begun last October at Leyte. He said Japanese forces of about 450000 were largely annihilated with 54000 American casualties and credited all services for the victory.
Allied bombing in Japan expanded as 117 square miles of factory areas were destroyed in multiple raids. American forces hit 26 home centers with incendiaries, targeting Tokyo and five major cities including Tokushima Takamatsu Kochi Himeji and others.
Canberra reports Prime Minister John Curtin died in his sleep at 4 am after long illness. He had led Australia since 1941, served as defense minister, and chaired the wartime advisory council. Acting PM Francis Forde announced the death and noted Curtin missed the San Francisco conference due to illness. He was 60.
The Petroleum Administration for War today barred further shipments of crude oil asphalt and residual fuel oils from the Rocky Mountain states to the Midwest due to demands on the Pacific Coast for fuel oil. The action cites navy and War Shipping Administration pressures.
The Weather Bureau forecast partly cloudy skies across Amarillo and vicinity and West Texas through Thursday night with little temperature change. New Mexico also stays partly cloudy with scattered showers in northern mountains in the afternoon. Highs range from 70 to 80 in the mountains and 90 to 100 elsewhere.
Washington disclosed that Secretary Forrestal and top naval officers from Washington and the Pacific conferred in San Francisco last weekend on the progress of the War with Japan. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz and President Truman discussed the matter. participants included Admirals King Ingersoll Spruance and Vice Admiral Jacobs with other fleet staff.
On July 4 in Berlin the American flag rose beside the Soviet flag marking partial U.S. occupation. Gen. Omar Bradley and Gen. Nikolai Barinov oversaw a 15 minute ceremony at the blood-stained parade grounds once linked to Nazi power. American and Russian units and leaders spoke of unity against fascism as debris-filled streets and crumbling landmarks framed the scene.
Manila reports Allied forces led by Sir Leslie Morshead's Seventh Australian Division swept into Balikpapan in an eight mile beachhead operation. They seized hill positions and advanced toward the Manggar airdrome and Samarinda oil fields while heavy bombardment and street fighting devastated the central town and surrounding refineries.
Amarillo marked the Glorious Fourth quietly with no fatalities in the area, one reported injury from a three car crash near Tri-State Park, and limited police activity. Thousands attended San Jacinto Park picnic and a four day rodeo closure at Tri-State Fair Park, while Buffalo Lake Gem Lake Palo Duro hosted outdoor recreation.
Lt. Chas L. McCormick of Abilene Texas among 461 officers and men who returned from Europe today aboard the Liberty ship Robin Sherwood.
The Navy reports the destroyers Twiggs and William D. Porter were sunk near Okinawa during the final stages of the campaign. Porter sank after a Japanese dive bomber strike near dawn June 10 with 61 wounded and no deaths, while Twiggs was hit June 16 by what survivors believed a torpedo from a night attack, leading to the bow loss and many casualties. Surviving crew were rescued by nearby ships.
