President Roosevelt urged Americans to pledge life as well as allegiance in a nationwide Independence Day radio address from Hyde Park. He warned freedom at risk abroad and vowed unity, speed, and toil to defend liberty and the seas, as Britain also marked the day with flags and praise.
Archaeologists in Oklahoma report uncovering about 50 skeletons at Summerfield near the Poteau River, suggesting the Summerfield Indians flourished around 450 A D. They buried kin in family groups with shells from the Gulf Coast and copper from the Great Lakes. A nearby dwelling foundation shows a central fire pit and deer and bear bones. Dr. Forrest E. Clements of the University of Oklahoma says the remains predate other mound builders by several hundred years.

Civilian Conservation Corps director James J. McEntee reported that in May over 10,000 CCC enrollees left the program for private jobs or military service, the largest monthly drop in four years. He noted 9,268 took private industry work and 592 enlisted in armed forces, with about 2,000 conscripts under the selective service act.
A two-seat plane crashed in a Sunray pasture killing Al Arnold of the Alamo Refinery near Borger and Earl Sweatt, Sunray garage owner. Nix of Borger owned the aircraft, and civil aeronautics inspectors investigated the scene two miles northeast of Sunray.
