Early crowds gathered at the canyon floor picnic site for a day of entertainment with family outings and pointed scenic views. Local organizers highlighted accessibility and safety measures as visitors enjoyed the shaded areas and planned activities.
The formal opening of Palo Duro State Park drew more than 10 000 people for a Fourth of July celebration and recreation in Palo Duro Canyon. Leonard Stroud rodeo drew over 5000 spectators with Panhandle cowhands against top riders. Park officials praised the event as a complete success and noted early public access at 6 AM.
The Associated Press reports 28 people died before sundown in Fourth of July celebrations. Fireworks caused three deaths and numerous injuries. Six drowned and seventeen died in automobile and traffic accidents as millions observed the 158th anniversary of independence.
San Antonio reports D. D. Harrigan a 50 year old former city engineer active in politics real estate and ranch holdings was killed in a Frio County gun fight over a cattle deal. An employee of the rancher was arrested after the shooting.
The northern half of New Zealand shivered as a cold wave brought heavy snowstorms and bitter gales, crippling communication lines. The United States enjoyed summer warmth while Wellington and surrounding regions faced record chill through July 4.
Four year old Vinievier Simpson of Kentucky amazed a Mountain Laurel festival crowd including Gov. Ruby Laffoon by spelling long words such as parallelogram asafoetida phthistic hippopotamus and many country names. His father Adron Simpson began tutoring him last Christmas for fun.
Two inmates died and about 40 were injured when the grandstand at Welfare Island penitentiary collapsed during a prison baseball game. Some 225 inmates were in the stand. the deceased were George Myers and Arthur Cornell, both of New York City. Medical staff from Correction Hospital attended the injured as police and ambulances rushed to the scene.
Mrs Samuel Insull lands in New York aboard the Majestic en route to Chicago after a Europe tour. She says she believes her husband will be vindicated and declines to discuss his trial while posing for photographers. A companion travels with her as she references a prior empire crash.
In Oklahoma City on July 4, Con E. W. Marland led Speaker Tom Anglin by about 45 000 votes in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Gov. William A. Murray backed Anglin, with Marland and Anglin advancing to a runoff set for July 24 as the New Deal campaign gains momentum.
Oklahoma City reports politicians claim Gov. Murray has lost his predicting touch as voting forecasts show Anglin and Marland leading. Murray had claimed Anglin would receive 150000 votes, Anglin 40000, and 30000 bandwagon ballots, ten days before the election.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace allegedly hurled a court summons back at Deputy Marshal B. Norris Becker aboard a train en route to Chautauqua. The suit by Royal Farms Dairy of Baltimore contests the Agricultural Adjustment Act and seeks to restrain book inspections.
A Greyhound bus crashed into a bridge near Lancaster killing four passengers and burning a fifth. Identifications include Miss Maxine Ellis, 32, Rocky Ford. Mrs Bettie Barton, 62, Kerrville. Miss Gertrude Peters, ticketed in San Antonio for Chicago. Driver Bob Downs survived with burns and gave his account.
Clyde Myers aged 16 spent the Fourth of July in a hospital with serious injuries after rescuing a dog trapped on a bridge from an approaching traction car. He seized the dog, tossed it into the stream then dived twenty five feet after it. His head struck the stream bottom and neck injured. Loren White pulled him from the water while the dog reached shore.
July 4 a death from waterfront rioting brings the dock strike toll to four since May 9. Argonne Reinhardt, 34, a former sailor, died of a fractured skull after police took him from a gutter on Clay Street near the Embarcadero. He was reported intoxicated.
George F. Fimon, 34, a farmer from near Hutchinson, Minn., critically wounded a 16 year old girl who refused marriage and then killed himself. Eleanor Teleskey, a roommate, said the girl's mother refused consent to the match.
In London Neville Chamberlain announced an Anglo German six month accord to avert a trade and monetary war over Germanys debt moratorium. The German government will provide sterling funds to the Bank of England to buy the nominal value of Dawes and Young plan coupons held by Britons.
Victoria Texas July 4 4 percent celebration ended in tragedy as Woodrow Clark of Kenedy drowned when a fishing skiff capsized. Two companions failed to rescue him as he could not swim.
Berlin reports show President Hindenburg resisting Nazi pressure as Hitler returns from a Neudeck conference. Von Papen remains vice chancellor amid rumors of a purge and possible leave of absence while family worries mount and mass arrivals of refugees seek safety in Poland.
Thousands from the Panhandle join Borger and Hutchinson County residents in Borger for July Fourth events marking independence and the Adobe Walls battle. The program featured a band on Main Street, a parade to Alamo Stadium, a donkey baseball game, speeches by Mrs. Olive K. Dixon and Judge H. E. Hoover, a political forum, a barbecue, and more baseball sponsored by J. C. Phillips of the Borger Daily Herald.
