London July 4 Great Britain moved to impose a tariff up to 100 percent on Irish Free State imports in retaliation for Eamon de Valera's refusal to pay the land annuities installment. J H Thomas announced in the House of Commons that De Valera would not submit the dispute to arbitration.
The body of 33 year old T. A. Roberts, a pipeline worker from Nederland, was sent to Beaumont for burial after a Saturday night automobile crash near Houston left him burned to death.
Thousands observed the 156th Independence Day as the Tri-State Fair Association held a full day at Amarillo fair grounds with political oratory, races, barbecues, shows, and a fireworks display. About 2,500 watched 12 laps of high speed auto racing with Bill Carroll of Lewis Kansas winning the Sweep Stakes in a Chevrolet Special clocks 12 minutes 40 seconds for 20 laps.
A tornado swept Washington Kansas about 40 miles southeast of here and wrecked the Burlington station and the high school. Communication lines were blown down and a general call for physicians was broadcast to aid the injured.
Speakers at the opening session of the sixth annual institute of public affairs at the University of Virginia urged modification of anti trust laws. Charles E. Bockus, president of Clinchfield Coal Corporation, called for a reasonable change and spoke for the coal industry common selling agency.
Mrs Elvira Dolores Barney of the West End goes on trial at Old Bailey for the murder of Thomas William Scott Stephen shot at her Mayfair flat on May 31. She pleads not guilty as witnesses recount threats and a party night with a fatal shooting.
Senator Sheppard of Texas says he opposes repeal or modification of the eighteenth amendment and the Volstead act and will vote against submitting the liquor question unless Texas voters direct him by referendum. He clarifies his stance after his party adopted a repeal platform and notes he would vote to submit a repeal amendment only if opposed in the Texas Democratic primary.
Estelline residents mourn July 4 as Med Barton a former Hall County commissioner and local farmer is found dead at his Parnell home. Inquest returns death by gunshot inflicted by his own hand. Funeral services held at Hulver Methodist Church this afternoon.

Weather was favorable and they will follow Winnie Mae’s route across the Atlantic to Ireland Europe Siberia Asia and back via the North Pacific and Alaska.
Qualified voters away from the city on election day may cast a ballot at the county clerk's office. Others out of town may vote by mail by written request. Mail requests must include poll tax receipt or exemption certificate. Absentee voting ends at midnight Friday July 8.
Captain Hans Bertram and mechanic Clausman, reported missing since May 17 after taking off from Kupang Island, were located alive near Wyndham. A native handkerchief and Bertram’s cigarette case sparked renewed search leading to their rescue. They survived on scant provisions after a storm and limited paddling attempts.

Dr. M. E. Dodd, vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastor of First Baptist Church in Shreveport, told 4,000,000 Southern Baptists last night that the prohibition planks of the Democratic and Republican parties are unacceptable. He also attacked John D. Rockefeller Jr.’s letter favoring repeal of the 18th amendment, saying it is not acceptable to his denomination.
British authorities announce plan to build a disarmament case at Geneva based on President Hoover's proposal to reduce world armaments by one third. The British delegation will not present a separate program but will offer observations, implementing and adapting Hoover's proposals as needed.
The first group of Texas delegates to the Democratic national convention arrived in Dallas last night led by Lieutenant Governor Edgar Wat of Waco. The delegation was accompanied by the Old Gray Mare band.
The Associated Press reports more than 80 deaths across the United States from Independence Day weekend incidents. Swimmers accounted for 43 fatalities and auto crashes for about 38. Notable outbreaks of deaths occurred in Butte Montana from a dynamite cap explosion and multiple drownings and vehicle accidents across Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oregon, New York, Ohio, Illinois, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, and other areas.
El Paso July 4 Walter Kimi 22 and Lynn Scott 20 were riding home from a dance when their car overturned three miles south of Baldosa on the El Paso Roswell highway. Kimi died at once Scott was fatally injured and taken to a Roswell hospital in critical condition. Scott is a resident of Oklahoma.
Floods along the Guadalupe and Frio rivers in Texas killed at least six people and left many others missing or marooned. Rescue efforts were hampered by swift currents as levee breaks near Monthalia threatened Gonzales. Farmers moved livestock and goods to higher ground while crop losses were expected to be extensive across Gonzales County.
In Paris on July 4 representatives from the United States Great Britain and Roumania held a joint conference to curb world oil production. If an accord is reached it will be sent to Russia to seek its cooperation.
