Senator Robert M. La Follette disclosed he will run as an independent in 1924, basing his bid on his public record and Wisconsin platform. The convention debated progress toward a new party as factions pressed for endorsement and timing.
President Senator Robert M LaFollette has formally accepted an independent candidacy urged by the Progressive convention at Cleveland. He will campaign on his public record with the Wisconsin platform as the basis of his campaign.
Associate Press reports Indiana senator Ralston withdrew his name from the Democratic presidential race after pleas from Thomas Feggar and the Indiana delegation. Taggart said the delegation pulled up their horses to avoid delay, noting the field was strong and sacrifices outweighed winning. Cox also withdraws with a telegram from the candidate stating he seeks harmony and will support the nominee once chosen.
At Madison Square Garden New York on July 4 the Fourth convention failed to nominate a candidate. Smith held a high water mark as maneuvers and party feuding revived tensions. McAdoo forces resisted inviting rivals to speak and talks of compromise intensified after adjournment as planners floated elimination schemes to break the deadlock.
The General Conference of the Southern Methodist Church approved a plan for organic union with the Methodist Episcopal Church South in a special session at Chattanooga Tennessee. The vote stood 297 to 75 with delegates still to be polled, and the measure now goes to annual conferences for ratification in 1925 if the southern body acts favorably.
Byron July 4 Officers and private detectives search for two men suspected of sending a letter to United States Senator Medill McCormick and his wife demanding 50 000 be placed under a culvert near the McCormick farm three miles north of Byron. The letter did not threaten or mention kidnapping.
At Madison Square Garden on July 4, William G. McAdoo surged to 530 votes on the sixty ninth ballot, within 202 of a nomination. Smith supporters rallied as Oklahoma and Michigan boosted McAdoo, while gallery cheers and chants filled the hall before order was restored.
The War Department announced fiscal year allocations for rivers and harbors under the act of June 7, 1924. Texas entries include Sabine Nachez waterway 960000, Galveston Harbor 168000, Houston Ship Channel 1460000, Anahuac Channels 15000, Port Aransas 98000, Brazos Island Harbor 17500, and other channels and harbors with smaller sums.
Canadian customs officers and BC provincial police captured an American boat loaded with whiskey near Smugglers Cove in Chatham Islands off the east end of Vancouver Island. A second vessel tried to flee the scene as the capture occurred, with reports released today.
A slow rain kept Amarillo indoors as the Glorious Fourth drew a quiet day. Weather postponed horse races and dampened fireworks. Ball game at Gasser park ended early while crowds sought shelter in theaters. Police reported little activity and no powder burn casualties.

A stream of state by state tallies shows McAdoo repeatedly leads in many contests with large scores from states like California Illinois Georgia and New York while Underwood and Smith also register significant totals. West Virginia and Davis figures appear alongside Ralston and Owens in scattered districts.
Readable fragment shows 4464 votes for McAdoo 9154 for Smith and 63 for Davis of West Virginia plus 894 for Underwood and 48 for Cox with continuation noted on page three. Entities include McAdoo Smith Davis Underwood Cox West Virginia.
McAdoo backers blocked a proposal to permit speeches by nomination candidates at a convention session. After a parliamentary tangle, the measure needed two thirds for suspension of the rules but failed 651 to 638, with McAdoo floor managers urging no votes. The issue centered on inviting candidates to address delegates and press before adjournment.
