An obituary notes the passing of the last lingering XIT cowboy living near Deaf Smith County, with ties to the Hereford area and the Yaid farm seven miles southeast of Memphis referenced in historical coverage.
A pilot identified as Robertson died at the scene when a yellow plane nose dived into a cotton patch about 106 yards northeast of a house. Witnesses say the pilot may have attempted to land. The FAA from Lubbock is investigating. Robertson is survived by his wife Cieta and daughters Sharon and Debra.

Pasadena California AP reports a string of light earthquakes along the San Andreas fault near Bul Paso Robles showing Los Angeles creeping northward. Scientists monitor ongoing tremors as a 20 mile fault segment reveals fractures and surface movement.
Attendance soared at Amarillo area outdoor spots as temperatures neared a century mark. Buffalo Lake drew over 21 000 visitors from Saturday to Sunday afternoon. Palo Duro Canyon saw 100 campers overnight and 1 000 cars. Lake Meredith saw heavy crowds with about 500 boats across multiple areas. Officials reported no lake accidents and warned of crowded conditions. Five deaths occurred on highways and in an air crash during the holiday.

A national spree of fatal accidents left 12 dead in two Arkans as two 16 year olds escaped Amarillo jail briefly before being recaptured. Across the country California led with 29 deaths while Texas and New York trailed.
French officials allege the United States spied from close range on the new French nuclear test series. They report two American Navy ships, the USS Belmont and USS Richfield, on station just outside the danger zone as the first blast occurred Saturday.
Four persons were killed in two one car accidents Sunday near Panhandle and Clarendon. A car failed to curve and tore a tree, splitting the vehicle. Victims include Eugene Hendricks 39 and his son James William Hendricks 14, of McLean and Mason Cranear 31 of Shamrock. A passenger Gary Charles Nicholson 29 of Panhandle was critically hurt.
