Berlin reports American occupation forces entering the city today after heavy fighting. Wreaths of tears and scattered headlines mark the scene as veterans march with Allied troops and Red Army police. Berliners react with joy and sobered relief amid ruins and reports of celebration and mourning.
Captain James W. Mooney of Montana leads a company of the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment into Berlin after arriving to billet troops. German civilians react with aid and offers of help while Russians influence billeting and access. Nearby, Allied air offensives against Japan surge with 500 night sorties and targets across Honshu and Shikoku, supported by Maj. Gen. LeMay’s bomber command and ground actions in Balikpapan and Java areas.
Senator Bushfield of South Dakota told the Senate the United Nations Charter has several glaring faults but he will support it to back world peace. He urged reservations on congressional power to declare war and warned against ceding sovereignty to foreign bodies. Hearings on the charter begin next week with plans to vote by mid-August.
Washington July 3. Herbert H. Lehman UNRRA director general proposed rationing of soap to send a European supply to combat filth and epidemic disease and to win the first great battle of the peace. The plan seeks to cope with famine and pestilence on the war torn continent and to ensure Europe’s postwar recovery.
Brussels July 3 exiled king Leopold III reportedly decided whether to abdicate or reclaim his throne. A royal palace communique said consultations with advisers at Salzburg had ended fueling belief in Parliament that he would not return to the throne.
The Senate banking committee approved 14 to 4 legislation enabling US participation in the Bretton Woods plan. Democratic Leader Barkley said the bill, already passed by the House, will reach the Senate on July 16, a week before debate on the US charter.
Prime Minister Churchill, booed and heckled, urged a Conservative victory before an estimated 25 000 in a Labor stronghold in northeast London during one of Britain's stormiest meetings.
The Potter County Rationing Board and the OPA agreed to ease restaurant strain by lowering withheld points from 25 to 10 percent of overissue. The move, backed by the board chair Chansler Weymouth, aims to keep eateries open for the public and military while reducing overdrafts. Weary bakers report lard and sugar shortages, with several cafes closed in Amarillo and nearby cities as July and August point reductions are planned.
Partly cloudy through Wednesday night with warmer afternoons. West Texas sees considerable cloudiness Wednesday and Thursday with scattered thundershowers, except in El Paso and the Panhandle. Last 24 hours showed highs around 83 and lows near 44. Precipitation 9 inches for the 24 hours ending 4 PM. Extended forecast through July 7 calls for near normal temps with a rising trend and scattered thundershowers Friday and Saturday.
Fourth of July options in Amarillo include a Kiwanis picnic at San Jacinto Park to benefit a recreation center. Other events show Buffalo Lake activities with boating and picnics and the Tri-State Rodeo at the Tri-State Fairgrounds with final performances at 2 PM and 8 PM.
War bond drive notes indicate little celebration as soldiers remain focused on the front. Potter County should push Series E purchases to meet a county quota of about 2.3 million dollars. The War Bond Office reports Potter County totals at 1,941,427 through Monday night and awaits week totals.
Amarillo newspapers print early editions with no advertising to save newsprint. The Amarillo Daily News and Amarillo Globe plan noon or afternoon editions as employees take half-holidays for Independence Day observance. Tomorrow morning’s News also prints early for holiday time with families.
San Jacinto Park on Third Avenue near Polk Street is the site of Amarillo’s Fourth of July picnic organized by the San Jacinto Kiwanis Club. The event runs from morning until 11 pm with rides, contests, bands, dancing, food, and a bany show worth a $50 war bond. Proceeds benefit a youth recreation center on West Sixth Avenue. no donations requested.
U S and allied forces mark Independence Day with broad celebrations from United Kingdom bases holiday for Army personnel to baseball and dances. Moscow hosts a concert by the Moscow State Philharmonic Orchestra in Lenin Hall. Soviet and Chinese messages honor the day and fallen heroes.
The Moscow radio reports that Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels has been unmistakably identified. Authorities say the body found in Berlin near the Reichskancellerei air raid shelter on May 1 was carried by SS troopers and not burned. Moscow plans a documentary with photographs for the German public.
