Donald Davis, 21, wanted for the slaying of Houston Officer Floyd De Loach, turned himself in at a beauty shop near Tomball after a long chase across Harris and Montgomery counties. Davis, from Abilene, also faces armed robbery charges and told officers he feared for his family. He was held by state police and Houston detectives in the Tomball area.
In Reseda California police Lt Tom O Neal a 41 year old veteran shot five times a handcuffed 21 year old Carl Norman during an arrest for questioning in a rape case involving the officer s daughter Shirley Diane Norman was critically wounded O Neal was charged with assault with intent to commit murder and relieved of command He rushed to the scene from his station after learning of the arrests and confronted the handcuffed men as they were being led to the district attorney s office for questioning.
The 5th Circuit vacated the Dallas School Board grade A desegregation plan and sent a district court to review a new plan filed to fully desegregate by fall 1967. Negro parents had appealed a lower court denial to speed up desegregation under the old plan. Dallas ISD trustees voted June 23 to desegregate elementary schools this fall, junior high next year, and senior high in 1967.
Cmdr. John A. Davis Jr., 43, of San Rafael, resigns as Pearl Harbor training officer after revealing he authored Shadow of Peril as Alek sandr I. Shdanov. The book blames U S admirals and Pentagon anti submarine policy for weaknesses and argues Soviet subs could penetrate U S defenses. Davis planned a White House submarine warfare consultant role, which was denied.
Two 80 foot spans of a downtown bridge over the Kansas River collapsed during rush hour in Topeka. Divers searched the river bed as officers feared another car with children had fallen. Kenneth Allen of Topeka was pulled from a submerged vehicle.
Real Eight Corp announced the discovery of a sunken Spanish galleon off Sebastian Inlet near Cape Kennedy. Harry Cannon said the find could surpass last year’s 1.6 million haul from Fort Pierce Inlet. Over 3,000 pounds of silver including discs, ingots, and pieces of eight were recovered from 25 feet deep, four feet under the sea floor, with debris indicating reef damage.
