Nationwide maritime strike talks broke off as President Kennedy's fact finding panel prepared a report on a Taft Hartley injunction. Labor Secretary Goldberg suggested a federal back to work order might end the strike, while unions and shipowners reached a temporary settlement freeing about 200 vessels to sail.

Civil Aeronautics Board found no reason for the low altitude of the plane that struck a Hart area telephone pole killing two Amarillo men as it neared Dimmitt. The craft had briefly landed at Dimmitt airport en route from Amarillo to Lubbock. Funeral services were set for Gus Hawkins and Bobby Slabaugh, with services in Hart Methodist Church and Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Bruce G. Hoch of CAB said no mechanical defect was found.
