Amarillo Captain Lumpkin dies as POW in Thailand
Amarillo native Captain Samuel H. Lumpkin, once Dr Hugh Lumpkin, died August 16 1943 in a Thai prisoner camp after being captured in the fall of Java. The War Department notified his parents and wife Miss Jean Kelley with details of his service in the 131st Field Artillery and the Lost Battalion. He was born February 12 1913 in Amarillo and practiced medicine here before enlisting. His survivors include his wife two sisters and a brother in government service.

Jap Prisoner Deal Shapes Prisoner Exchange Efforts
Thirty three members of the Japanese embassy to Berlin left by plane for the United States to participate in a prisoner exchange. The group included Gen Hiroshi Oshima and Adm Hideo Kojimabara. They were escorted by the Third Division guards led by Lt. Robert Van Sickle. The diplomats were seized at Bad Gastein in the Austrian Tyrol as Germany collapsed. They carried a message via an interpreter promising shifts in relations and warning of changes upon return.
