Candidates especially those seeking congressional and senatorial posts will be busy today and tomorrow. Major draws are the rodeo Canadian and the Coronado celebration at Clarendon with most district hopefuls attending both events.
The Panhandle Plains Fourth of July observance starts with Clarendon rodeo and Coronado pageant directed by Blanding Sloan. Amarillo plans no ceremony. many towns host lakes events, dances, parades and fireworks with races, a bathing beauty contest, and a burning wall stunt across multiple sites.
Texas officials urged extreme caution for the July Fourth holiday citing 42 traffic deaths last year and forecasting up to 50 fatalities. Col. Homer Garrison Jr. warned travelers to avoid overloading boats, swim safely, and follow police guidelines. Extra patrols will man major highways.
Kansas City dispatch says former secretary of war Harry Woodring, returning to Topeka, plans open discussion next week about events leading to his resignation. He will be guest of honor at a banquet July 9 and indicated a definite likelihood of addressing his cabinet resignation.

British air ministry described heavy fighting with multiple fires and searches for losses as U boats and Italian subs operated in Atlantic and Mediterranean. UK parliament debated moving civilians and proposed a first sales tax amid wartime measures.
Riots and street fighting erupt as King Carol seeks Axis aid after turning from British ties. Romanian forces mass on borders, Transylvania and Dobruja claims intensify as Hungary and Bulgaria push, while German pressure and Soviet actions redraw power.
Panhandle Water Conservation Authority secretary Carl Hinton warned that war is heading for America at a McClellan Creek meeting near Pampa. He cited Washington sources and German activities, linking the war to dam and lake projects while noting probable funding in 1941. Present were about 40 people from Amarillo, Miami, Shamrock, Wellington, Pampa, Tulsa, and other towns.
Amarillo banks report deposits of 20,530,012.90 as of June 29, up 1,051,272.39 from a year earlier while total resources reach 22,429,177.09. Houston banks show 311,733,624.14 in deposits, up 27,931,764.07 since last year and 5,742,332.11 over March. Fort Worth area loan activity dips slightly as wheat harvest delays keep funds idle, with deposits at 111,706,487 and loans down 480,242 over 90 days.
Dewey Raymer of Pleasant Valley reported a severe hail storm struck Weatherford Oklahoma Monday night. Hail fell for three hours with stones up to 16 inches in circumference smashing dozens of automobiles and injuring several people including a man who fractured his hand trying to shelter under a door handle.

Hollywood mourns film comedian Ben Turpin who died at 71 from a heart attack. Rosary was recited tonight and a Requiem Mass is planned Wednesday at 10 A M at the Church of the Good Shepherd Beverly Hills. Turpin's widow Babette requests privacy. Turpin once rivaled Chaplin and Arbuckle in earnings.
Mrs D M Deason died suddenly at 9 10 yesterday morning at 1611 Fillmore Street. She was 82, a longtime Amarillo resident, member of Polk Street Methodist Church and its Browning Sunday School Class. Born August 24 1857 in Macon County Georgia, she married Daniel Marion Deason in Pineola Texas in 1874. Survived by two sons Walter and Ross. two daughters Mrs H M Timmons and Llewellyn Deason. 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Body in state at Griggs and Sons Funeral Home. funeral arrangements pending relatives.
A 21 degree drop in temperature occurred here late yesterday. The mercury fell from 85 degrees at 2 35 PM to 63 9 degrees at 8 35 PM. Readings held at 63 9 degrees for two more hours as low clouds reduced evaporation.
The Amarillo area expects scattered showers on Wednesday with a fair to partly cloudy sky. West Texas will be fair Wednesday with increasing afternoon cloudiness and scattered showers southward by Thursday. New Mexico shows fair conditions with afternoon cloudiness and scattered thunderstorms over northern mountains, warmer northeast Thursday.
Washington July 2 The agriculture department announced the purchase of an additional 24 510 000 pounds of lard and pork products for distribution to needy through state relief agencies.
Thompson campaign organizers announce a large Panhandle caravan to the Ernest Thompson for governor rally in Waco Friday. Meeting tonight at 8 in Amarillo Building Room 240 invites all planning to join. transportation provided. Caravans gather in Hillsboro Friday 4 pm for a west Texas parade to Waco with 150 cars expected and two buses joining in Fort Worth. XIT band and Amarillo drum corps will march with boosters. logistics handled by Mason King, Clay Thornton, and Sam Elkins. Colonel Thompson spoke in Texarkana and Kilgore before.
