Rookie Outruns Pack To Win City Derby

A crowd of 1500 watched 65 Panhandle youngsters race in Amarillo's 25th annual Soap Box Derby. Twelve year old Paul Rutherford won in 27.8 seconds over 650 feet to claim Class B and city honors and earn a trip to Akron Ohio. Rutherford’s white Bullet racer with flaming skulls was sponsored by Furr Food. Class A runner up was Billy Griffith with 13, sponsored by Airport Limousine Service. Dana Reynard placed fourth, sponsored by Palo Duro Barbershop, and Mika Hunnicut finished fourth sponsored by High Plains Building Co. Rutherford received a trophy a $500 bond and a kiss from Miss Amarillo Carroll Baker.

Kennedy Returns From Mexico Triumph and Ties

President Kennedy returned to Washington from a warmly received visit to Mexico. He pledged a new era of understanding with Lopez Mateos as crowds in Mexico City celebrated with thunderous cheers. The president and Mrs Kennedy landed at Andrews and proceeded to the White House. The trip drew about a million cheering supporters and included a wreath laying at the national monument and Mass at the Basilica. Kennedy heads to Philadelphia Wednesday for a July 4 speech.
