Old Buffalo Wallows in Southeastern Colorado filled with insects as grasshoppers plague the region. The account, written for United Press by Harry Galbraith, reflects the rural devastation and economic ruin after years of drought dust storms and now locust-like hoppers threatening crops and cattle.
James W Summitt a 37 year old WPA worker known as Eddie the Sailor was arrested at his Inglewood home for questioning in the Inglewood triple child murders. Detectives planned to take him to verify his alibi and face relatives who saw a man matching his description. Three other suspects were held including John Vasquez 20 and Luther Dow 33 with a continued report on page 23.
Treasury experts told a joint congressional tax committee of a new method where wealthy Americans set up multiple family trusts to split income into small portions and dodge high surtaxes. Cases included Greenville Clark and wife with 16 trusts saving 90000 in 1936 taxes, Tiernan and Wallace saving 611328, Stranahan trustees saving 701227, and Louis Blaustein using 65 trusts saving 573322.
The 55 000 acre Whitsel Ranch in Ochiltree and Roberts counties was sold to the Panhandle Mineral Company of Amarillo for 300 000 dollars cash. The deal, the Panhandle’s largest in years, was announced by H H Hoover and A V McQuiddy as heirs’ representatives. Escrow of 30 000 dollars was posted as good faith.
The Senate refused a 56 million dollar three year increase to aid tenants in becoming farm owners. An amendment by Senator Connally to boost to 150.6 million failed against administration support. Connally decried executive influence while Bankhead called the measure a starter demonstration.
A thunderstorm swept the Panhandle injuring and killing after a bolt struck James Adkins a 17 year old wheat field worker north of Borger. He died instantly and his body lay at Carver Funeral Home in Borger awaiting funeral plans. Reports noted scattered rain from Amarillo to Hereford and Pampa with light totals elsewhere.
In Ossining New York July 1 Anthony Garlaus Harry Eisenberg and Watson Edwards were executed in Sing Sing for the November 8 Brooklyn tavern holdup murder of Isaac Shain.
Forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for Friday to be fair and cooler. West Texas and the Panhandle expect partly cloudy skies and a cooler day. New Mexico should have partly cloudy conditions with probable showers and thunderstorms in the north central area and little temperature change. Temperature readings show highs near the mid 80s and lows around the mid 60s with past values noted.
Amarillo hosts a West Texas inspection by Claude Teer John Wallace and Henry Meyer of the state board of control as they evaluate Amarillo as the site for an $817000 hospital. other officials and local leaders accompany them at the site committee dinner and tour noting the board’s noncommittal stance while continuing state purchases.
Local wheat rose to 1.06 dollars with Chicago at 1.25 as rust fears push prices to a nine year high. Wheat movement shows over 1600 cars in June, with 230+ cars shipped from the South Plains and only one car locally yesterday, per Amarillo Grain Exchange officials.
Four men died in the Norfolk and Western freight train wreck near Bluefield West Virginia. Clark Maxey 23 was found among the wreckage after being struck by the locomotive plunging from an 180 foot trestle. Others named are brakeman James Ball engineer W W Snead and fireman Ezra McHaffa.
Liza Grey Chaplin Aguirre, former wife of Charlie Chaplin, was granted a divorce from Henry Aguirre Jr. on grounds of mental cruelty. Mrs. Lillian Grey testified the husband abused the actress and called her vile names threatening publicity. Judge Burnell criticized Hollywood short marriages.
The Senate adopted the conference report on the Interior Department supply bill authorizing about 42 million dollars for western reclamation construction in the new fiscal year. House concurrence will send the measure to the President for signature, with a report the House conferees expect to consider Wednesday.
In District Court testimony during an election contest, Henry Fields, a citizen ticket supervisor, disputes claims of a life plot against Mayor John R. Miller. He denies paying or offering bribes to suppress Miller and contradicts defense claims of conspiracies by the citizens ticket and their attorney. The proceedings spin from ballot recounts and accusations of ballot stuffing and indictments.
In Nampa Idaho a drugstore fireworks window display exploded killing a woman and two children and injuring 15 others. Victims include Katherine Miller aged 6 and Ardyce Pavek aged 9 with Mrs T C Daniels 29 killed instantly and Mrs George Le Delle of Marsing critically hurt.
UPR Rep J William Ditter urged President Roosevelt to declare law and order firmly to end strikes. Senator Ellender warned continued labor stoppages could destroy industry confidence. Chicago patrolman Higgins testified a strike riot left 10 dead, detailing the shooting and riot scene with witness accounts.
Postmaster General Farley accuses Republic Steel Corporation of trying to provoke civil disorder and strife and to force use of armed government forces at strike picketed plants in Warren and Niles Ohio. A brief filed by H L Underwood asks the court to deny a mandamus that would compel continued action.
Tokyo reports Manchoukuo warned Russia to keep to the main Amur River navigation near Sennufu Bolshoi and Shatzukuokuo Islands or face drastic self defense measures. Moscow disputes blame for Wednesday’s frontier clash as both sides claim island ownership and river control.
