Gene Robinson 5 and Jim Robinson 3 wandered from home to wade in a bar pit beside Highway 66 near town. After a five to six hour search, family and neighbors recovered the boys from the shallow water. Their father works in the West Wheeler oil field and funeral plans were not finalized.
William Lee Ferris admitted shooting Howard Carter Dickinson during a robbery that produced about 150 dollars. Jean Miller and two other party girls described a scheme to pick up men, get them drunk, and rob them, with Ferris claiming Dickinson refused to surrender and prompting the fatal shot at Rouge Park. Ferris and the trio were arrested in Fort Wayne after Dickinson’s body was found near the park.
Democrats join Republicans in a unified stance as they oppose a proposed move in today’s vote. The cross party united front signals a high stake decision on the measure and its political implications.
The House defeated the regulatory plan 216 to 146 in a dramatic vote spurring President Roosevelt to press a legislative move to abolish unnecessary utility holding companies by 1942. Rankin rushed back to try to shore up party lines as debates sharpened and charges flew over lobbying. The measure now goes to conference with the Senate for final resolution.
One of the first shipments of Panhandle wheat arrived yesterday in Amarillo. The upper Plains grain came from E L Burnett in Randall County and was sold to Kearns Grain and Seed Co. for 77 cents delivered with a $5 premium for the first load.
Al Moldroshke a Hammond painter and paper hanger with one arm rescued two men by towing a 28 foot motor cruiser with a broken drive shaft to port on Lake Michigan. He rowed a 16 foot boat for four hours to reach safety. The cruiser owners remained unidentified.
Temperatures in Chicago rose to 82 and Lincoln to 92 as Kansas City hit 94 marking the hottest day of the year in Middle America. The heat claimed a second fatality in Oklahoma with 17 year old Wilbur Records near Oklahoma City.
Forecast for west Texas shows fair conditions with continued warm air. Partly cloudy with a chance of showers in the southeast portion on Tuesday. In New Mexico expect fair weather Tuesday with possible unsettled northwest areas and little temperature change.
The First National Bank of Bronte 25 miles north was held up by two masked shotgun bandits who fled with under 500 dollars. They forced president L T Youngblood, vice president J T Harmon, cashier Mrs C G Williams, and Miss Virginia Youngblood to lie on the floor as cash was taken. The robbers did not take till money and failed to lock the vault occupants inside.
Dee Miller, 30, of Smithfield Texas, dies in a crash near Birdville after an earlier incident in May in Fort Worth when he bit Policeman Joe Graham on the finger. Graham later died from blood poisoning.
The Glass sub committee reported a revised federal reserve board bill to the Senate banking committee. Chairman Fletcher called the measure a fairly good compromise, modifying the House version on credit control and other features. Awaiting possible full committee report, it stands as a major administration proposal alongside the tax bill.
An itinerant mattress repair man reported camping by a newly made grave north of Gallup while a deputy would investigate as a possible clue in the disappearance of four Illinois travelers. Authorities traced the case to a buried site near Albuquerque where burned personal effects were found four miles east on the Sandia Mesa.
A small band of men attempted to enter Citizens Bank in England Arkansas on July 1 but fled under gunfire. A posse of over 50 pursued and blocked highways while officers recovered two shotguns nitroglycerine a Plymouth sedan and a notebook that may reveal the gang members identity. One member was reported wounded or injured.
Amarillo Junior College plans a permanent building funded by a federal grant and local funds without a bond election. A $45,000 PWA grant and $55,000 local funds would total $100,000 for a campus on a double block site between Twenty-second and Twenty-fourth Avenues and Monroe and Washington Streets. Joe B. Dooley heads the board delegation to Fort Worth to file the grant today.
Beverly Hills dispatch reports Mussolini states the Abyssinia war could last about five years with another 15 years to mop up remaining issues. He warns about oil prospects and geologists who misled him, noting diminished European war talk due to lack of conferences.
Meridan Mississippi July 1 Fred and Al Key landed after 27 days 5 hours 33 minutes in the air setting a new endurance flight record. The Ole Miss monoplane touched down on a soggy field to a cheering crowd and the brothers appeared tired yet happy.
First distribution of Works Progress Administration application forms began yesterday in the Panhandle with limited supplies to county relief administrators and planning councils. The forms detail project operating procedures and fund approval requests while state official H P Drought notes delivery and possession rules and promises further guidance on allowances.
E C Winfrey of De Berry Texas was charged with murder without malice and driving while intoxicated after a head on crash 18 miles east of Marshall that killed Mrs Clara Wallace 40 and William Jernigan 50 and left four injured including three seriously Eyewitnesses J F Merendino and wife of Dallas reported the collision between two cars on a straight road
In Peabody Massachusetts on July 1 a pre Independence Day celebration led to a fatal firecracker accident. Edward Hogan nine was killed when a firecracker hurled into a 1000 gallon steel naphtha tank exploded and sent him into the air. Gordon Wodeworth nine and Ruth eleven were injured with burns and cuts. Their mother Mrs Hogan suffered burns while attempting a rescue.
More than 300 cotton producers approved the AAA during a Texas Legislature cotton committee hearing. Cully A. Cobb of the AAA Cotton Division claimed 1933 cotton income in Texas was double 1932, and 1934 income rose 19 percent despite drought, with higher farm purchasing power seen in the cotton belt. The session aimed to gather material for a permanent cotton policy.
Secretary Wallace commends U S wheat producers for leadership in adapting to changing conditions at a Wheat conference with AAA officials on proposed four year crop control contracts. Attendees include J R Roberts Medford Oklahoma and R B Gist Canyon Texas.
R B Cust of Canyon leading Texas growers met July 1 with national wheat advisors extension service workers and AAA officials to begin a conference series. George E Farrel directed the meeting as the tentative contract undergoes review for suggestions and recommendations by former representatives.
W D Loter, 90, hanged himself from a rope in a boxcar at his farm home east of Childress. A justice of the peace ruled death by own action. Pioneer resident since 1889 leaves seven children, 42 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
O T Nicholson of Shamrock calls a meeting at 11 today at Hillcrest Country Club to organize a Panhandle Senior Golf Association covering Western Oklahoma the Texas Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico. The plan sets age limits, aims for a summer or early fall senior championship, and seeks broad local participation.
Chinese police and loyal soldiers crushed mutineers in the Tung chow region, capturing 92 rebels 20 miles east of Peiping near Tuncchow. The prisoners were followers of General Pai Chien-Wu after a failed assault on Peiping. Chinese reports also said troops fired on civilians at the Grand Canal, killing three.
J D Minton age 20 is killed in a highway 77 wreck at Naples Morris County. His father Ben Minton is seriously injured as the son drove the automobile involved in the accident with the two men racing to the scene.
Professor Soai Tanaka of Kyoto Imperial University revealed a process turning common rice and straw into a fibre resembling cotton. The Japan Chemical Society said commercial production remains distant and would be costly unless key chemical reagents can be made synthetically.
Big time speed boat races attract entries from six states for July 4 at City Lake southwest of Amarillo. Sponsored by the Tri State Fair and sanctioned by the National Association, the event offers all day access with 50 cent adult and 25 cent child admissions. The day features fishing camping and picnicking with races beginning 10 30 am and 1 30 pm.
