The House passed Nixon's income surtax extension 210 to 295 after a tense final vote. The bill keeps the 10 percent surtax through December 31 and 5 percent for six months, with broad calls for swift tax reform. Senate action is anticipated amid expected amendments.
The House approved the surtax extension with 154 Republicans for and 179 against Democrats split 56 to 179 while 114 Republicans supported last year. First enlisted man Arthur B Crean received number on Feb 28 1918 and Gen John Pershing was first officer to receive one.
Two men died and a third was critically injured in a head on collision 10 miles north of Dalhart on U S Highway 87 about 3 p m Monday. Jewel L Fite 50 of Wildorado and Thomas Williams Hembree 22 of Sunray died at the scene. Lorraine Fite 46 and Joan Adams 17 of Sunray were injured and treated at local hospitals.
Local resident Thomas Meyer killed a Brown Recluse or fiddleback spider at his home after observing markings on its back. The bite is described as potentially severe, with initial numbness or sting followed by hours of intense pain and possible nausea or fever.
