The death toll from the Louisiana hurricane was revised upward to 350 as crews search wreckage along the gulf coast. Mass typhoid inoculations were readied after serum shortages, and a mass burial was planned amid rows of unclaimed victims.
A Sunday cloud cover cooled Amarillo after a brutal 106 degree peak on Saturday. The Weather Bureau logged 102 degrees Sunday and 101 in 1933, with KGNC reporting 104. Forecast calls for lingering heat relief with possible afternoon clouds and isolated storms. Moisture fell in Dumas with hail as Dalhart and Stratford likewise saw brief showers.
Sen. Lyndon Johnson says foreign oil imports pose an immediate threat to national security and cites Texas losses from reduced oil production and tax revenue. He notes Texas leads in federal highway building, with 267 miles of super highways under way and bids for 278 more.
Eight teenagers from Gatesville's maximum security unit escaped and opened fire on private and police vehicles across central Texas. Wilford Davis, 16, was recaptured after a crash near Barry. Bobby Hodges, 16, was recaptured near Corsicana. Davis admitted firing at motorists who would not move, while Scott was wounded in the arm. Officers sustained windshield damage in a running gun battle, and the group fled in a stolen panel truck. They had escaped during a sports outing and fled toward Hillsboro before fragmentation and pursuit.
U.S. Weather Bureau expects generally fair conditions in Amarillo Monday morning becoming partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers and hot highs near 101. Tuesday remains partly cloudy and hot. In Panhandle and South Plains clear to partly cloudy through Tuesday with few isolated storms at night.
San Francisco June 30 An Episcopal rector believed drowned in an Idaho boating accident last April 26 turned up at Grace Cathedral morning service today. Canon Richard Byfield said the Rev Andrew Daughters 37 of Pasco Washington identified by voice by his wife after he spoke with Byfield. Daughters booked airplane passage for home and reunion with his family. Byfield recalled Daughters saying he felt he was a minister and remembered crawling from a lake. Remembered details sparked Byfield to recall the rector’s sister Mrs Harold Fleharty in Spokane.
Weather data shows Amarillo with 155 sunny days out of 182 in 1957. Readings at 3 p.m. Sunday indicate wind and visibility around 15 mph with partly cloudy to cloudy conditions and clear skies reported in Oklahoma City and Houston.
Duane Ray Bruce 22 of Spearman died when the 1953 car overturned on Highway 15 seven miles north of Stinnett at about 10 16 p.m. Passenger Lloyd Evans Perryton in fair condition at North Plains Hospital at Berger.
Milan reports Miss Milani a 22 year old waitress swallowed a diamond she believed was fake after a jeweler valued it at 250 dollars. She recovered in hospital then faced theft charges. The judge acquitted her stating the swallowing was accidental and done in good faith.

Jerry Lee Thaxton a 25 year old Pampa construction worker was held for extradition by Denver police after a shooting in Clayton New Mexico Thaxton fled to Colorado and was found asleep in his bullet riddled truck during the man hunt Thaxton faced extradition as Union County officials prepared to transport him back to New Mexico for court in connection with the Saturday morning shooting of Samuel T Jiron Thaxton’s truck was heavily damaged by bullets and Jiron received treatment at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Amarillo where his condition was listed as good

The Minutemen precision jet fliers perform over Amarillo Air Force Base at 2 p.m. and the four day Will Rogers Range Riders Rodeo opens with two 2 p.m. shows in the Range Riders Arena. A 1-year-old bobcat named Kitty owned by Leonard Butch Dorsey at the Dixie Motel draws tourists and fills all 22 units as visitors come to see the 20-pound animal. Butch’s father, FE B Dorsey, says the motel has thrived since Kitty arrived and that travelers trek long distances to glimpse the cat. Kitty, once fed from a baby bottle, now eats mashed potatoes, various meats, ice cream, and eggs, and has had its claws removed at 93 months old.
