In Hancock Massachusetts a brake slipped on a crowded ski lift at Jiminy Peak injuring at least 19 people. A spokesman said 150 to 200 riders were on the lift when the antirollback failed and chairs slid toward the top causing cars to collide with each other and with machinery at the base.
A leniency recommendation guides the upcoming sentencing of Claudine Longet by District Judge George Lohr for criminal negligence in the death of her lover Vladimir Sabich. Sabich died after a .22 pistol incident at the Aspen chalet he shared with Longet and her three children.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Utah spent over 60 000 to try and execute Gary Gilmore and keep him alive through two suicide attempts. Costs covered trial days three in Utah County and additional sheriff deputies prison hospitalization and a firing squad fee. Nine entities including Atty Gen Hansen and university medical center contributed expenses.
