London and Berlin clash over Nazi raids in the North Sea as Churchill questions German air power. Berlin claims nine ships sunk, seven enemy armed vessels, while London says no Allied losses. The raids appear aimed at blunting Churchill’s stance and marking Hitler’s rise anniversary.
The House appropriations committee proposed a 51 percent cut to next year’s agriculture department supply bill, totaling 634 million, 20 percent below Roosevelt’s request and far under this year’s 1.8 billion. Farm state lawmakers denounced the move as harming farmers while Senate actions restored unrelated shipbuilding funds. Dr. W J Johnson, 56, superintendent of Loftitenio State Hospital, testified he never made improper advances to female employees or job applicants, never discussed sex matters with them, and never proposed a nurse accompany him to Mexico. He denied ouster from Rusk State Hospital in 1923 over morals charges and claimed his hospital’s parties often included liquor while others did not. Amarillo police carried out a surprise raid on 310 Buchanan Street seizing four narcotics types worth several hundred dollars. Three suspects, including operator Fred Rogers known as Blind Fred, are held with charges to be filed in federal court. Detectives Leo Uselding, Sales Coffee, and Homer Rowntree led the operation, which ran from about 930 a m to 1 p m yesterday.
Oakland investigators exonerate four German shepherd dogs linked to the death of Manuel Cabral, 57, a laborer. City poundmaster R. C. Trotter reports Cabral died of natural causes while dogs reportedly licked his hands and face after lying on his bed for five days.

In Fort Worth on January 30 Harry Lee Barnes age two died after catching fire on an open stove then pulling covers over his head on a bed in an incident blamed on momentary parental absence. The child was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barnes.
Hitler, oddly upbeat, pledges retribution to England and France at a mass Berlin gathering marking his chancellorship anniversary. He mocks Daladier Chamberlain and Churchill, claims Germans will win the war, and notes German air and naval actions against Allied shipping in the North Sea and coastal waters.
A 20 000 gallon railroad water tank froze in Middletown New York on January 30. Workmen thawing it accidentally set fire to the wooden support. Firemen faced multiple equipment freezes as hydrants and hoses froze. After delays a locomotive supplied hot water but the tank never thawed and the blaze was extinguished.
The Potter County Taxpayers League nominators meet at noon at the Capitol Hotel to select a slate of officers. Wade Brymer of the Amarillo Real Estate Board led the public finance committee that organized the league. Brymer says all nominating members will be named by noon and a mass meeting will follow later in the week.
The Commodity Credit Corp reports loans to farmers totaling 50,521,211 dollars on 88,646,040 bushels of 1939 corn through January 26. The report, dated Washington, was released January 30 by United Press.
Rep. Hook of Michigan declined to testify at a secret Dies committee session about letters alleging ties between Chairman Martin Dies and an active Christian Front collaborator. Weltha Wims nine year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Bonnie L Wims suffered a severe burn on her left side after her dress caught fire from a cook stove as she leaned across to get food. Neighbors extinguished the blaze and she was taken to the scene. She regrets losing her red and blue Sunday dress and fears missing school.
The Panhandle Republicans announce Ralph B. Innis of Kansas City will speak at the Lincoln Day Dinner February 12 in Amarillo. Innis, a nonpolitician and insurance man, will address practical business concerns, with tickets priced only for the meal. The event aims to unite Republicans and friends. over 200 attendees expected, including out of town delegations.

Col. Ernest O. Thompson of Amarillo Texas Railroad Commission outlines a $33 million gas pipeline plan to transport 120 million cubic feet daily from the Texas Panhandle through 120 communities to the Iron Range in Minnesota. Financing includes an $11.5 million Reconstruction Finance Corporation loan. federal review underway. Gas would largely come from Hansford and Sherman counties with no current outlet.
