Severe winter storm hits Amarillo with widespread outages

Heavy snow and freezing rain caused thousands to lose power as ice brought down lines and trees. SPS crews battled outages since 2 am aided by extra crews from Lubbock and New Mexico while 50+ fire calls and 25+ traffic accidents kept responders busy. 7000 homes lost power after a southeast transmission line failed. The National Weather Service logged 2.54 inches of precipitation as temperatures rose to 33 and fell to 29.

Three Die in One-Vehicle Wreck Near Farwell

Three people killed in a Thursday night crash seven miles east of Farwell on U S Highway 84 amid winter weather. Dora Jurado 25 of Midland Jessie Ann Harris 48 of Odessa Kristoffer Cowell 19 of Midland died at the scene or after transport to hospitals. eight others were injured with details released later.

Red Cross Opens Shelter in Amarillo After Winter Storm

Red Cross volunteers Jana Kidd and her daughter Ashley helped victims despite power outages as Amarillo Chapter opened a shelter at Central Church of Christ at 7 p.m. Friday. Derek Cromwell says it’s the first time the Red Cross has run a winter storm shelter in the area. Walt Kelley notes ongoing freezing rain and city readiness. No one was present at 7:45 p.m. with cots blankets and a full kitchen available. Omero mentions feeding 100 people at Tyler Resource Center earlier Friday.

Marsh’s dance disrupts live Weather Channel broadcast
