The State Department announced ending mediation efforts with China and withdrawing over 9 000 Army and Marine personnel. The move shifts responsibility to Chinese leaders and raises questions about future US policy toward Chiang Kai-shek and the Communists.
Dust winds swept across the Plains causing zero visibility and a mass crash on the Plainview Tulsa highway. More than 20 vehicles were involved with injuries including Mr and Mrs Joe King and Virgil Reager. The dust storm expanded to San Antonio and reached near the Arkansas and Louisiana borders.
A Phillips Petroleum truck collision blocks the highway eight miles south of Tulsa. Dozens of cars and two transports are damaged. visibility drops to near zero as sand and dust sweep from plains fields. Ambulances, roadblocks, and school disruptions follow amid mass travel delays and stranded motorists.
U S Attorney John D Clifford Jr said a former Kent s Hill Seminary history instructor and a 17 year old girl from Readfield are held by the FBI in Santa Fe New Mexico. A Mann Act warrant is being sent and the girl is a material witness. Trufant a 32 year old with a wife and child in Mount Vernon Maine is believed to have fled via parts of South and Central America after the school closed for Thanksgiving.
A deadly tornado swept through Mammoth Springs and Salem Arkansas and nearby areas at dusk injuring many and destroying scores of homes. Reports noted a fatality near Thayer Missouri and a nearby farm home collapse. Medical teams and ambulances from across the region responded to the disaster.
A sudden freak wind storm during a dust storm in Fort Worth ripped a roof from one residence, damaged another house, and destroyed a garage in the same block. Witnesses described the roar as the sound of a dozen freight trains, with no injuries reported. An official count of losses was not yet estimated. A doctor from a nearby town was en route to aid the injured.
Winds of cyclonic force struck the White Sands proving grounds blowing the roof off the main V-2 rocket assembly building and flattening nine smaller structures. Lt. Col. Harold R. Turner postponed the February 6 firing for a week or two due to debris danger and could not estimate the damage.
The United States warned it will slaughter, quarantine, and dispose of infected cattle if foot and mouth disease from Mexico reaches U S shores. The Agriculture Department prepared a rapid response plan with ready veterinarians and mobilization steps and urged border shows and border-crossing hunting expeditions to be paused during the emergency.
Ernest E. Hutchinson 27, Borger oil field worker, was killed while repairing a pump jack on the Pitcher Lease near Borger. He died when struck by a heavy steel beam from about 12 feet high. body found at 2:30 pm. Survived by wife Melba, son Dewey, two daughters Elaine and Linda, three brothers and five sisters. Funeral arrangements pending.
In Pikesville Maryland a caged pet bear named Pete grabbed a four year old girl. Two men Howard Ambrose and Roy Singer freed her but the bear mauled her left leg. The child was taken to University Hospital Baltimore where the leg was amputated.
Amarillo and vicinity expect Thursday with partly cloudy skies, diminishing winds and colder air. Friday will be clear to partly cloudy with slowly rising temperatures. West Texas should see snow in the Panhandle early Thursday, then colder but partly cloudy with warming into Friday. Temperature readings show highs near mid 40s and lows around 40s, with sunrise at 7 47 A M and sunset at 6 14 P M.
An official informant says Britain expects Stalin to seek a general military alliance replacing the mutual assistance pact with Russia. Britain aims for full cooperation with the USSR without conflicting with United Nations obligations. Cabinet will discuss once Stalin clarifies reservations in the current treaty.
The House approved 373 to 35 to extend indefinitely high excise levies on liquor furs jewelry and many items marking a major GOP congress action. Debate highlighted a rift over a tax-cut plan as Republicans back a 20 percent income tax reduction while seeking to freeze excises through July.
Lt. Gov. Shivers appoints Sen. A. M. Aikin Jr. of Paris as chairman of a general senate committee to probe pardons and paroles with a 20 day deadline in mind. Other legislators backed bills on rural school aid timing, a $75 monthly rural teacher bonus, and pari mutuel betting legalization at tracks. The senate also sent two bills to the house and moved a $150,000 emergency measure for livestock disease prevention forward.
A man identified as Daniel S Voorhees walked into police headquarters in Los Angeles and said he wanted to confess to the murder of Elizabeth Short 22 known as the Black Dahlia whose nude bisected body was found in the city.
President Truman halted an intended 10 percent rise in rents and sent the issue to Congress. The plan, prepared by OPA under Temporary Controls, would have raised rents with exemptions for veterans housing. Truman said rent policy should be decided by Congress and stressed an individual basis rather than a broad across the board hike.
H. A. S. Collins, a British banker abducted by the Jewish underground, was found in Jerusalem tonight and taken to a government hospital. Police said he arrived at the Hadassah Clinic near Zion Square in a severely weakened state after more than six hours since the deadline for his return. He reported being badly treated and having to fight his way out. An earlier threat of martial law against a third of Palestine's Jewish population was tied to his return, though officials indicated the order could be revoked quickly.
Poll tax sales neared seven thousand with 6,849 paid, including 631 on the day. Hundreds more payments were mailed awaiting receipts as Potter County tax office stays open late tomorrow for last minute taxpayers.
