Gov. Alf M. Landon denounces the New Deal, waste, and centralization as delaying prosperity. He frames unemployment, taxation, and debt as the costs of federal policy, urging Republicans to balance fairness with fact in a Kansas Day banquet address.
Four snow events in January covered the Panhandle Plains and parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico with two to six inches, improving soil conditions and moisture. Officials say moisture from January 18 and yesterday will sustain soil health into spring, boosting expectations for a bumper wheat crop.
Irene Hare not in Amarillo in spring 1933 when J W Welch claimed illicit relations with her. Mrs Carl Hare testified at George Hamlin's second murder trial as state rebuts sanity claims after Hamlin killed his wife with a hammer on January 4 last year. Partial car identification noted near Hamlin home. Hare said Mrs Hamlin was in Amarillo only two weeks in 1933. Aunt Irene home for baby’s seventh birthday April 20. Judge Reese Tatum presided in 69th District Court.
In Macon Georgia on January 29 Democrats at a grass roots gathering urged Governor Eugene Talmadge to enter the presidential race. They adopted a platform seeking defeat of Roosevelt and upholding the Constitution while reaffirming previously unfilled 1932 Democratic planks. The audience, mostly Georgians, greeted the call with strong enthusiasm.
Roosevelt will address Boy Scouts of America on February 8 from 6:35 to 7 P M EST over WJZ Blue NBC and WABC Columbia networks. Walter W Head of St Louis and Dr James E West chief scout executive will also speak. The program marks the 26th anniversary of the movement.
F W Fischer of Tyler, rival of the so called pension code foe, files to run for governor. He is brother of L M Fischer, Amarillo attorney, partner in Fischer and Fischer with offices in the Oliver Eakle Building. L M Fischer, longtime supporter of Gov. Allred, lives on 3101 Van Buren.
Meat forecast shows Thursday in Amarillo and West Texas generally fair with Thursday afternoon colder north to south. New Mexico expects generally fair conditions. Hourly temperatures yesterday show low readings around 9 AM and 11 AM with notable precipitation totaling .18 inches in the 24 hours ending 4 PM yesterday.
Special to The News from Midland reports Buck Harris resigns as game warden for the East Panhandle district. Charles Smith, Canadian city marshal, will succeed him. Harris cited duties at Big Bull ranch on Oasis Creek in Hemphill County as his new role.
L Marian Trosper a Oklahoma City student at Stanford wandered onto the S S Amblo at Malolo pier and found herself aboard as the liner sailed the Golden Gate unaware. She wired her parents for funds to cover the unplanned Honolulu voyage.
Jan 29 Eastland District Judge George L. Davenport remanded W. W. Clark of Gorman to the county jail for refusing to answer grand jury questions. The grand jury was investigating a liquor matter.
Ted Kincannon, 38, veteran air mail pilot, died when an American Airlines six-seat Vultee failed to clear snow trees and forced landing near a farm in Denton. Five passengers suffered minor injuries. Kurtsinger, owner of the farm, said Kincannon saved lives by shutting fuel off and warning others.
Amarillo resident H E Hertner died at 78 yesterday at his home 1600 Hughes Street after years of failing health. A Swiss immigrant who arrived more than 50 years ago he built a long business career here. Funeral services were set for 4 pm at St Andrews Episcopal Church with pallbearers J O Gulerie John Cowan Guy Carlander E W Hardin Charles Ware and W R Pumphrey. Burial will be Llano Cemetery with Masonic Lodge conducting grave rites. The body lay in state at N S Griggs & Sons Funeral Home prior to services.
Amarillo joins a nationwide observance of President Roosevelt's birthday with three dances at The Nat Roseland and Shrine Temple from 9 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $1 with free admission for ladies. Proceeds support the Crippled Children's Council of Amarillo and the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation.
Amarillo celebrates M. C. Nobles 80th birthday. A landmark city builder since 1892, he helped found Nobles Brothers Wholesale Grocery, Amarillo Street Railway, and Amarillo Oil Company. He organized the Hapgood gasser drill that launched the Panhandle gas and oil boom, aiding regional growth and opportunity.
Alfred E. Smith stands firm on his record against the New Deal and President Roosevelt. He calls Senator Robinson’s reply to his Liberty League speech a canned talk and accuses him of distorting the issue. Smith says Robinson stumbled over his own broadcast remarks and intends to clear the issue.
The House heard a fiery Republican demand for impeachment of Secretary Wallace amid inflation concerns tied to the farm bill debate. Senate action on the AAA substitute proceeds despite doubts from agricultural committee members about the soil conservation subsidy bill, with a 15 to 2 vote to send it to the floor.

Ernest J. Fryer, 16 year fugitive, surrendered to Sheriff Jess Slaughter in Big Spring to face a murder charge from Ardmore Oklahoma. Fryer waived extradition and admitted years on the run across the United States and parts of Canada and Mexico. The 1920 slaying of Blondy Thomas at Dillard Crossroads is the case he faces.
Snow blankets Amarillo and surrounding towns with two to six inches reported. Measurements show Dumas four inches and Plainview six, while Lubbock nears six inches and Tulsa records four. Snow also falls across eastern New Mexico, with several towns averaging two to three inches.
Farm agents report wheat conditions favorable despite harsh winter with Amarillo receiving about 2.25 inches of snow and total monthly snowfall exceeding 10 inches. Temperatures are expected to plunge to record lows with near zero readings in parts of the Panhandle, while most snow remains. Heaviest fall occurred on the South Plains with about six inches.
Potter County voters face a Friday midnight deadline for poll tax payments. Tax collector Miss Jewell Davidson reported 5,004 payments so far, with an expected turnout of 9,500 to 10,000 and 1,500 exemptions issued, most of which are permanent exemptions for aged residents.
