Air Colonel resigns from service and will depart the Army on the following Monday after President Coolidge accepts the request. The official notice confirms the acceptance and upcoming discharge date.
Washington report says President Coolidge accepted Colonel William Mitchell’s resignation from the army, effective February 1, 1928, restoring him to civil status. Secretary Davis issued the order and noted the court martial record remains a matter of official record. Mitchell received the news without comment and did not insist on mentioning any “good of the service” stigma in the army orders.
William H. Holland, a Santa Fe machinist, died at St. Anthony's sanitarium from wounds after fatally shooting Mrs. Clara Johnson at the Van Noy eating house then injuring himself. He had been charged with murder in the case and died after lingering unconscious most of Friday and early Saturday. Mrs. Johnson was shot twice through the heart while on duty as a waitress at the Van Noy Cafe. The double tragedy prompted further police consideration as the case remained before Justice Landis and the grand jury.
Sixty-three miners were trapped at Mossboro mine near Helena Alabama with 38 feared dead. twenty-five rescued and ten confirmed dead. The isolated site hindered rescue as a relief train with doctors and crews hurried to help. Identified victims include William Harrison Robert Ball Doyle Lambert Pat Adams Bill Carie Jeff Holloway Hesey Harrison Enoch Woodson William Temple Percy Pierce. The Tennessee Coal Iron and Railway property leases Premier Coal Company to operate the mine five miles from Helena and thirty miles from Birmingham.
A gas explosion at Bear Canon Coal Company Mine Number 8 near Trinidad Colorado killed eight men, with thirty three others escaping. Survivors suffered severe burns as rescuers labored for hours to reach those trapped.
Rear Admiral William A Moffett outlined a five year program to spend 14 million dollars on lighter than air craft. Funds would cover two dirigibles costing about 4.008 million each a 1.6 million training dirigible a Pacific coast base at 4.5 million and 1.65 million annually for maintenance including 1 million for Lakehurst and 600 thousand for helium production cooperation with the Bureau of Mines.

In Austin, January 29, Frank Lanham, former highway commission chairman, and Attorney General Dan Moody sparred in a four hour session over the Hoffman Construction suit. Lanham defended surfacing contracts with American Road and Hoffman, calling the 1000 mile job no small task. Moody pressed on the reasons for the contract awards as the session touched on a $600,000 recovery from American Road. Lanham declined to say if he resigned from the highway panel.
In Houston on January 29 customs and prohibition agents raided the German motor ship Rio Bravo, seizing 263 cases of fine wines and liquors and arresting nine men. The raid occurred as sailors sold liquor to bootleggers aboard the vessel during a party on board.
Charles A. Gonder, 1876 birth, formerly managed the Gunter hotel in San Antonio and hotels in several midwestern cities. He was found shot to death Wednesday night at Palms California. Gonder was born in Grant Parish Louisiana and had lived in San Antonio for years.
Houston dispatch reports J Frank Norfleet, famed man hunter, traveling from Houston to Hale Center Texas after visiting W R Spencer now serving time in Fort Worth. Norfleet says his work is done and he plans to rest at his farm ranch home, starting anew.
A Maine Central railroad derailment near Cold Stream bridge on the Washington county branch killed two men and a child and injured about twenty others, six or seven of them seriously, as the Calais to Boston passenger train crossed the bridge two miles west of Marion.
Colonel William Mitchell's resignation was accepted as the Senate approved several sections of the tax bill. Navy lighter-than-air craft plans were explained by Rear Admiral Moffett. New charges were raised in Johnson's bid for Sohall's Senate seat. Geneva disarmament talks won Senate approval. Theodore Roosevelt labeled "not a good American" by Gerson of Memphis.
Austin reports the road contractor F G Hoffman will face two indictments for swindling and perjury. Bond is $2,500 per case. The state claims Hoffman’s company used about 230,000 gallons of asphalt, at 20 cents per gallon, in patches across Howard, Martin, Midland, Ector, Crane and Ward counties, with the perjury tied to his affidavit.
William Pitt Shattuck, 66, originator of more than forty inventions, including a forerunner of a British tank, died at his Minneapolis home today.
In Moyamensing prison, David L. Marshall tells a detective he bungled the murder of Anna Dietrick by dismembering the body. He says using poison would have let him claim she died by her own action, avoiding capture.
Mayor Lee Bivins urged action on the city water issue saying talks have ended and engineers’ recommendations are ready. He predicted bonds would be sold next week to fund immediate work while water board members weigh Layne & Bowler’s proposal versus the Kiersted plan. Commissioners Fisk and Harris split on final acceptance, with several board members urging full consideration of Layne & Bowler’s cheaper, different option.
Mrs Catherine Rogers and her 19 year old daughter Zera were found guilty by a circuit court jury of first degree robbery in Sioux Falls. They had confessed to holding up the Renner State Bank at Renner and sought an insanity plea. Sentence will be passed Tuesday with potential penalties from one to twenty years in the state penitentiary.
John W. Weeks former secretary of war arriving in Honolulu with Mrs Weeks argued Col William Mitchell who faced a army court martial for resignation had not been sufficiently punished by the military trial.
Liberal Kansas citizens and the Liberal chamber of commerce filed a brief as intervenors in the Chicago Rock Island Pacific case seeking permission to extend lines from Liberal to Amarillo. They argued the extension would open cultivated land to farming by reducing transport costs for their products, boosting profits. Beaver Meade and Englewood Railway opposed, saying traffic loss would hurt their business, unless the extension ran from Amarillo to Texhoma instead.
An oil truck collided with a car driven by two Lorenzo youths near Floydada, resulting in the death of Cord Hart from injuries sustained in the crash. The accident prompted a local investigation and tributes from the community.
A head on collision four miles east of Floydada on the Matador highway fatally injured Cord Hart 34 of White Flat Motley County and injured Welmon Parchman 14 and Dunlap 26 both of Lorenzo. Hart died shortly after the crash. The two youths were taken to their homes. funeral plans pending.
In Cleveland on January 29 the Fulvi family suffered multiple poisoning deaths after drinking wine at a home party. Arthur Fulvi 83 and four children James 14 Frank 11 Dorothy 10 Mary 8 died. Mother and Gino 4 were hospitalized in serious condition. Victor did not drink. Stomach contents showed traces of acid. A wine bottle was taken for analysis.
Campbell McCarty a 19 year old Black man was hanged in Cook County jail for the holdup murder of a night watchman. The sentence was carried out today under state capital punishment laws.
Colonel Charles R Forbes former veterans bureau head and John W Thompson of St Louis seek US Supreme Court review of their two year prison term and 10000 fine for defrauding the government in hospital building for disabled veterans. The US Court of Appeals denied a rehearing and mandate to Leavenworth would follow. Forbes reported in Beaton and Thompson in St Louis.
