Miners Escape Fire After Deep Mine Rescue at Mount Morris
About 100 miners fled as a roof caved in and a fire began at Christopher Coal Co. Humphrey No. 7 mine in Mount Morris Pennsylvania. Twelve trapped miners found a safe air pocket and barricade, one man was stretchered out. eleven walked to safety with rescue teams three thousand feet from the bottom. Joe Kurilko received oxygen at the surface and was taken to a hospital with no serious injuries. The incident occurred around 6 30 a m EST and halted overnight operations for the shift of more than one hundred miners. Mount Morris lies near the Pennsylvania West Virginia line, south of Pittsburgh.

A massive power failure blacked out a large Florida region Tuesday night, affecting more than half the state's population from Daytona Beach to Miami with Jacksonville spared.
